Board spammed

Is apps47inc a bot? If so is this desired behavior?

I was a little excited to see so many unread posts since my last visit... Until I looked closer. :bash

The really embarrassing part is the unwanted forum sponsor who is spamming us without participating in the way we intended and wanted also is not technically proficient enough to put in proper links about half the time.

I'm in a bit of an odd position since of course I've been a sponsor for years here. But I also don't post 10 times the posts advertising compared to ordinary posts on the platform.

My own 2 cents this is how you kill a forum, too many intrusive ad posts diluting the content. I can't keep up with real posts when I have to scroll through pages of ad posts to find real posts.

I see what you are saying...

OTOH, I would be really sad to see this place fall.  I really enjoy and respect the opinions and thoughts of the members here.  And the small number of really active guys keeps the drama and garbage posts down.

I try to log on every day.  Harder during tax season, but I try.  That said, I simply go to the "Show unread posts since last visit."  If apps47inc started the past, I ignore it.  Otherwise, I read them.  There's rarely two pages of topics showing in the unread posts list, and it doesn't take long to catch up, unless there's an update to a story.

Hey folks. Thanks for reaching out about apps47inc. This vendor has been problematic on a few sites so we are currently reviewing our options on what to do about the situation. I have escalated this to the 'higher ups' who will determine their fate as a vendor on the site.

    Cheers,

I agree.  Its aggravating.  That said, if it keeps the lights on I'll figure out a way to deal with it and try to maintain what we've built here over the years.  :coffee

Maybe if they condensed their posts to one Deals post each day?

I'm actually a fan of deals, and have looked at many of the ones posted by regular members.

This board is good at finding a balance. We have experience from a lot of different viewpoints here, and we still (mostly  :neener ) all get along.

That would work well. He could have a daily post with a cluster of 5-10 links  :hmm .

I've actually used a couple of his ads.  But most of the time the links don't work here.  On a couple of other boards he is a vendor on, they do.

His ads don't bother me much since they are all in one spot I can ignore if I want.

I don't think the content is the problem it's the way it effects browsing the site. I always go to unread posts either on Tapatalk or the computer and if 3/4 of the content is ads that is off-putting to me at least.

I do like the single consolidated post a day idea. Really I've looked at a few myself and there are some good deals to be had etc. It's just the frequency compared to the traffic here that I see as the problem. If you dropped that number of posts into a more active forum it would dilute things a bit and make it less obvious and obnoxious. But as it stands if I were on a single platform I'd write a script to block that users posts entirely. But with Tapatalk I don't have that ability.

I know wta isn't what it was 8 years ago, all forums have taken a hit. I still find value in the community here more so than virtually all the other forums I'm a part of. Which is why I'm still here. I do lurk allot more than post this last year because I've been so busy with life. But I do intend to bring back more of my typical updates as time permits.

    Take care

Hey folks. Just wanted to let you know that this vendor has been spoken to about the posting/spamming issue and as a result, should not be posting as frequently. If you notice it becoming a problem again, please feel free to let us know.

I have noticed it was better.  An ad post a day is fine, but before it was over the top.

Agreed it's been much better. I think really they've just gotta take into account the forums traffic. If the ads outnumber the normal posts about things it's a problem and going to further hurt the forums rather than gain buyers.

That said it has been far better.

    Take care

At least three so far today.
I wish he'd just make a one a day "Daily Deals"post, I think it would be more likely to be read than the multiple single item adds he's doing right now.
Seriously, aside from the irritation factor I'm just been ignoring any posts from that account at this point. Sort of like tuning out whatever is being said by the voice of someone you know to be full of BS.

If the account owner reads this:

You may have noticed a number of the people here are annoyed by your "junk mail" type approach to advertising which boarders on spamming.
Generally speaking, you want to be gaining positive attention from your target audience....not irritating and alienating them.

Before it was annoying, but he seems to have scaled back quite a bit.  I don't find it obtrusive anymore, but if he picks up again I will be more upset than the first time.

I would add two items to this.

First, you have turned me off to the point that I am now checking links other places and active avoid gun.deals links other places as well.  I used to occasional click you links at reddit.com/r/gundeals, but anymore I work at not clicking anything that might feed your engine.

Second...You can redeem yourself by posting actual contributions to our dialog.  We have nothing against you being here, but we want community members.  Join in the occasional thread and offer something up.  It will go a long way.

Those two things said, I would be surprised if a real person ever even reads these comments.  I suspect a bot posts the links and no human has paid much attention since they ran the bot in test mode.

Community involvement?  At best, the poster is a low-paid intern who may or may not be a gun owner.

The irony is all this irritation the ads have caused, their links are all broken and don't take you anywhere.

Posting good deals... Man, that's one thing.
But when most of the links he posts doesn't work...  :facepalm
    Quite seriously, it's a problem.  It's embarrassing.

I think someone's bot is rebelling... the link for the PSA AR worked yesterday...  maybe it reverted a version?
