Storing ammo in below freezing conditions.

Was curious if storing ammo in below freezing conditions is harmful. Ive been in the cold with ammo but never for prolonged periods of time.

    AFAIK, the real killers of ammo are moisture, heat, and excessive temperature cycling.

    As long as your ammo stays dry and at a relatively stable temp, I wouldn't worry. Be careful about condensation when it warms up.

    Agreed, I have had ammo stored at below freezing with no issues what so ever. Condensation can be an issue though. Silica Gel or other similar dampness trapping compunds will help.

    Storing indoors is vastly preferable to outdoors--for long periods--mostly to avoid temperature cycling.  (What Jessel said.)

    I don't know how these prices compare to anywhere else, but it could be a starting point.

    Most surplus sores or food storage sources have silica.

    Note though:  It really only works well in airtiught containers.  Otherwise you're recharging it quite frequently.

    Awesome thanks JessieL, gonna go ahead and pick a few of there liter cans. Im glad this stuff is cheap. Im storing it in a pelcican 1780 44.90" x 25.32" x 16.50" case That should keep most of the moisture out...Well it better for 400 dollars plus the silica gel.

    I keep a small amount of .45 ACP & 5.56 (50 of each) in my car year round, JIC. It's in a airtight can w/gel and I've never noticed any change in it through our rather wild Minnisota seasons. What I worry about is the lithium batteries & water I have too. I'd think cycling through ammo on a regular basis that gets exposed prolly is a smart thing to do.

    I hate 5 boxes of Wolf 7.62x39 become totally useless in about 4 months in my trunk... dry trunk.  Nasty corrosion.
