Anyone who has driven in Seattle rush hour gridlock knows there may not be walking dead, but there are certainly driving dead.  And voting dead.

I haven't heard of that but it is not too surprising.  Prions are not really alive and they are remarkably difficult to deactivate.

CJD is really, really bad. Just had a coworker pass away from it. Less than 6 weeks from symptom onset to death.

Wow! CJD is the stuff my nightmares. How did your co-worker contract it?

We really arent sure, in fact they really arent sure it was true CJD, they just know it was a prion disease from the biopsy.

Noticed a change of behavior (less serious demeanor) then affected balance slighlty. When to the Dr for a check up and was dead 5 weeks later.

I'm pretty sure he was former military, could have got it from beef in Wales. Dr stated it usually lays dormant until something triggers it around the age of 60.

Looks like "bath salts" have made it here too.  Well, at least into the news.  They've probably been here for a long time as they are apparently legal to buy over the 'net.

Apparently the face eating guy wasn't on "bath salts".  Just regular crazy according to the news today.

The stuff being sold as bath salts have been around for several years now but the media is whipping up the hysteria so people are hearing about it more now.  It's the hysteria du jour.  The whole "kids drinking hand sanitizer" hysteria was dying down so something had to replace it on the breathless special reports on the local news about newest threat to the children.

Many of the the makers of bath salts and synthetic marijuana are damn good chemists.  When one chemical or formulation is  outlawed they literally have a new, legal variety the next day.  When Iowa made a certain substance illegal on a certain date, the manufacturers had new product in the stores ready to sell at 12:01am along with certified documentation from independent labs detailing it's composition and lack of the now illegal substances.  No joke.  It was on the shelves and ready to go at 12:01am.

People want their intoxicants.  Americans in particular have an insatiable appetite for them and always have.  Make one verboten and a dozen more will pop up to replace them.  The only reason synthetic marijuana and bath salts exist is because actual marijuana and regular pharmaceutical grade amphetamines and narcotics are essentially forbidden by law.   You can have your intoxicants unadulterated and in known dosages sold by merk or pfizer or bayer or you can have them made by really smart ivy league educated semi-underground chemists as has happened with K2 and bath salts.  Or you could just turn the business over to mexican cartels.  Take your pick.

Bath Salts may well be the hysteria du jour, but they do exist and they are a problem. You can debate endlessly whether prohibition makes it better or worse, but in this instance, at least, the media has identified an actual issue. Part of the problem is that the family of substances in question drive some users to compulsively re-dose, which leads to the stimulant psychosis freak-out that the attack in the OP resembled (but, apparently, was not).

I usually get a chuckle out of some of the news hype (ZOMG, YOU CAN GET HIGH ON NUTMEG!), but this started hitting the news about the same time that we started having to strap people to gurneys on a fairly regular basis, so I'd say they were on the money this time.
