To expect life to treat you fairly because you're a good  person,
is like expecting a bull not to charge you because you're a vegetarian.

Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.
Mark Twain

“There are two rules for success: 1) Never tell everything you know.”
Roger H. Lincoln

Shooting fish in a barrel is easy, but it is even easier to shoot a hole in the side and let the water drain out.

"You only get one death. Make it a good one."
-Either Dead Six or Swords of Exodus. I believe either Hawk said it, or else Val attributed it to Hawk, but I can't for the life of me remember.

"We're all gonna die, die standing up!"
    -Jed Eckert, Red Dawn (1984)

Had a rather heated conversation with a loved one regarding why I carry a gun. The conversation was sparked by a report that ISIS had made credible threats against shopping malls in the U.S. Since we live within spitting distance of one of the largest malls in the country, this was of particular concern to me. I noted that I was going to order a new, better holster (done) and start carrying my gun regularly. My family member didn't understand this: in their opinion, my little pistol would be no match for a bunch of fanatics with suicide bombs and assault weapons (their words), and ISIS will probably take over the country anyway, so I shouldn't bother carrying.

They're right, at least partly: if I find myself stuck in a terrorist attack, or an active-shooter situation, there's a good chance that I will die. But I refuse to die begging for mercy, or drowning in my own blood as some fanatic saws my head off with a rusty machete. If I die, I'm going to die fighting.

You rock, raptor. If it wasn't regarding one of your loved ones, I would say "fluff their opinions and defeatist attitude".

Keep on keeping on, my friend. A handgun may not be the best equipment for the job and we could all use more range time, but between a murderer and a victim? I'll take a shootout any day as opposed to a massacre.

Capacity wasn't really an issue then... and honestly really it's not even an issue now.

:thumbup1 indeed. Don't get me wrong, I love my family, but... well... know how at every family reunion there's always that one "weirdo" who really doesn't fit in? *raises hand* That's me.

And keeping with the thread, here's a saying my great-grandfather had:

"I have lived many years and seen much trouble, most of which never happened."

I take that to mean prepare for the worst, but don't worry yourself sick over it. Odds are it probably won't happen, but if it does, then you're ready for it.

I can already tell this thread is going to explode and have on going additions just like weirdness.

One of my favorites from Jefferson-
    Quote
"A strong body makes the mind strong. As to the species of exercises, I advise the gun. While this gives moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprise and independence to the mind. Games played with the ball, and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun therefore be your constant companion of your walks." —Thomas Jefferson, letter to Peter Carr, 1785

Two of my other favorites from patriots are noted under my username and in my signature line.
This may be considered as the true palladium of liberty. . . . The right of self defence is the first law of nature: in most governments it has been the study of rulers to confine this right within the narrowest limits possible. Wherever standing armies are kept up, and the right of the people to keep and bear arms is, under any colour or pretext whatsoever, prohibited, liberty, if not already annihilated, is on the brink of destruction- St. George Tucker, Blackstone's Commentaries

Educating yourself does not mean you were stupid in the first place; it means you were intelligent enough to know that there is plenty left to learn.

    - Melanie Joy.

The sign of intelligence is that you are constantly wondering.  Idiots are always dead sure about every damn thing they are doing in their life.

First, train yourself to get suspicious every time you see simplicity. Any claim that the root of a problem is simple should be treated the same as a claim that the root of a problem is Bigfoot. Simplicity and Bigfoot are found in the real world with about the same frequency.

So reject binary thinking of "good vs. bad" or "us vs. them." Know problems cannot be solved with clever slogans and over-simplified step-by-step programs.

Young'un, the moment the doc slaps a newborn on  the arse, and they begin the journey of life, and they also begin the journey toward death.
This journey is shorter for some, longer for others. For some the journey is easy, for others living hell. You got today feeling as you do, and there is no guarantee you will be here tomorrow, much less feeling better, worse.
