Bank Guard Killed in Peru

The video is graphic.

Quote
PERU - A bank security guard is dead after exchanging gunfire with a gang of at least six thieves. The gang tried to take the money from the bank vault during an incident that occurred three days before Christmas. Jonathan Noriega Castro the senior security office was shot in the head during the robbery. He was 53 years old.

Note that he's carrying what I'm guessing is a .38 revolver, and is outnumbered six-to-one.  It's hard to tell what's going on in the video in a couple of places, but he wounds one of the bandits, causing him to flee.

Unfortunately for the guard, another bandit runs up and shoots him in the head, killing him.

As I've said before, armed with only a handgun against multiple armed attackers, the odds are not in your favor, regardless of the type of gun you're carrying.  I've brought this up multiple times, as there's a certain segment of the shooting culture that thinks a big magazine turns a handgun into something it's not.  As near as I can tell, the security guard ran out of time before he ran out of bullets, and it doesn't appear that he'd have been any better off with a high-capacity 9mm.

This isn't to understate the advantages of a semiauto, but it's an attempt to avoid overstating them.  You should be confident in what you carry for defense, but not overconfident.  At the end of the day, you're just one dude with a handgun.

I feel another security guard or two, even armed with .38s, could've turned the tide of this engagement.  But, all by himself, Mr. Castro bravely gave it his all, trying to protect the lives of the bank patrons, and sacrificed his life in the effort.  His efforts were not entirely in vain; after being engaged, the criminals broke and fled, and it doesn't appear anyone else was harmed.
