This guy has real world experience with a societal collapse. I have read this review. He was in Argentina IIRC.
You only have power over people so long as you don't take everything away from them. But when you've robbed a man of everything, he's no longer in your power - he's free again. -Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. - Ayn Rand

"I am free, no matter what rules surround me. If I find them tolerable, I tolerate them; if I find them too obnoxious, I break them. I am free because I know that I alone am morally responsible for everything I do." -Robert Heinlein.

One has not only a legal but a moral responsibility to obey just laws, but conversely, one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws. –– Martin Luther King, Jr.

I think that is Ferfal, the guy whose post on survival during argentina's economic collapse has become something of an internet authority on survival.

That was Ferfal.  I think he finally was able to get out of Argentina and now lives in North Ireland.

    Seriously?

Trading one kind of angst for another if that's the case...

I've heard that Northern Ireland has calmed down in recent years.  It's not like it was back in the 1970's.

That is true.  But my grandmother's family left Ireland because some of their people were murdered in a struggle that has been going on for centuries.  That kind of hate doesn't go away, it just goes under.  Yugoslavia, for example.

Give them an excuse like a European Economic Collapse and those people will be pulling hatchets out to settle old scores.

Seems funny that an "authority" on survival would put himself in harm's way like that.   ::)

Let me add this little link to the thread, much of it is useful as general disaster handling/response, even if the the link is directed at Katrina specifically- http://bayourenaissanceman.blogspot.com/2008/08/lessons-learned-from-hurricanes-katrina.html  It's a bit of a read folks, don't click the link until you've got a while to read, and a notepad ready.

Specifically- Note the contents of the "Third Post".  Interesting indeed.
This may be considered as the true palladium of liberty. . . . The right of self defence is the first law of nature: in most governments it has been the study of rulers to confine this right within the narrowest limits possible. Wherever standing armies are kept up, and the right of the people to keep and bear arms is, under any colour or pretext whatsoever, prohibited, liberty, if not already annihilated, is on the brink of destruction- St. George Tucker, Blackstone's Commentaries
