Shockwave Technologies Raptor Grip.
by MadOgre • 11/23/2013 • 0 Comments

This was one of those “What the hell, I’ll try it” sort of things.  With a big “I’m glad I did” sort of results.   I was in the market for a new stock, but not exactly for a pistol grip… so I’d likely have passed this up until our friend Ryan Horst at Tannerman’s Trading Company offered this to me.

1463644_10201826800685112_121060649_n

This is a synthetic product that is reminiscent of the results of the old school mod of chopping down a standard wood stock.  It’s got that look and feel, but with a better finish.  Compared to some other pistol grip, or Breacher grips out there, this has a better look and feel.  Better in that it looks more traditional.  It is both solid and comfortable and during recoil, it feels more comfortable than most standard pistol grips out there.

1454971_10201826801245126_1321051266_n

Mounted on a standard factory Remington 870 HD model, it helps make for a nice compact Home Defense weapon.  It begs to be used on an SBS or AOW shotgun.  The Raptor Grip is not for everyone.  The purpose is more specifically CQB in tighter areas, or for where you need to transport a potent weapon in as compact a package as possible.  This isn’t for any Duck Commanders out there.

1456503_10201826800965119_123126961_n

You can see it removes a lot of length from the weapon, while keeping a legal OAL.  Any shorter here and I’d have to be doing some ATF Paperwork.

Available from Shockwave Technologies.  For the Remington 870, NEF and H&R Clones, and IAC Hawk shotguns.   Also available for Mossberg 500 and those related shotguns.

    Pics didn't quite show.

Also, prepare for the obligatory screaming about how a stockless shotgun is stupid and wrong. Before anyone brings it up, bear in mind that George didn't say that this was a replacement for all shotgun buttstocks for all purposes.

Wait, no. The link is fine. It just won't go to it automatically by clicking on it. Odd. Not sure if that is a browser issue or a WTA issue. Probably browser.

FWIW, I still can't see the pictures.  All I see is a line of characters. For the first one, I get this:

    Quote
    1463644_10201826800685112_121060649_n

If I go to the MadOgre page, click the picture, it's listed at this address:

    http://madogre.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/1463644_10201826800685112_121060649_n.jpg

So if I surround that bad boy in image tags, I get this:

    So here are the pics.

And here's the similar Speedfeed Pistol Grip kit:

    http://www.lapolicegear.com/speedfeed-pistol-grip-kit.html

They're both reminiscent of the classic "sawed-off shotgun" look.

George is right, it does beg to be short-barreled.  And if you get that shotgun, you have to get the best accessory ever for it: the Andrews Custom Leather firepower rig.

Right. That is on my list of things to get. 870 + SBS + that stock.

Now, due to the limited utility of such a rig, it is way far down the list. But it is on it.

The reason this Raptor grip came about is because if you put THIS grip on a pistol-grip-only Mossberg (commonly available from the factory) or Remington (rarely available from the factory), and then swap out the barrel for a factory 14" barrel, it is NOT considered an NFA item as long as you don't conceal it on your person.  As in, no $200 tax stamp needed. It's one of those NFA "loopholes" in the wording put out by the ATF.  I'm currently doing this mod on a PGO Mossberg 500 I bought, and have discussed it with ATF agents in our shop.  Trust me, it is legal, but ONLY if the shotgun started life as a Pistol-Grip-Only firearm (which means it is an "other firearm" and not a "shotgun").  With the older Speedfeed grip shown above, the overall length of a shotgun with a 14" barrel is under 26", so doing this build would be either a SBS or an AOW (depending on how it started life).

If you specifically want an 870, have your dealer contact Lew Horton Distributing and see if this PGO Remmy 870 is still available for order.

    http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/special-runs/past-special-runs/shotguns/model-870-express-synthetic-pistol-grip.aspx

If it is, just buy that (and make sure the dealer logs the 870 as an "other firearm" in his A&D book and on your 4473), buy the Raptor grip, and then pick up a 14" factory fore end from Remington to swap out.  No tax stamp needed.  All the details are listed on Shockwave's website that George linked to above.

And, actually, since this would be very much a toy gun, a Mossberg might be a nice one to convert. Plus, that tang safety is just made for that kind of grip ... and it's easier to get ...

    Hmmm ...

And hmm again. Ohio defines any shotgun with a barrel length less than 18" as a dangerous ordnance, and is not legal to possess unless it is registered in the NFA. So, a 14" PGO looks like it is out, but a registered 14" SBS would be OK. Hrmm ... a case of one law's loophole being another law's rope snare. I may be misreading that, but that's what it looks like.

Now ... transfering it as an AOW ... that probably gets around that.

Gun laws make my head hurt.

Well, if it's a registered SBS, that's all you need to know I guess.  Should be fine for State law.

I tried to post this earlier, the intarwebz ate it.

Huey, the great news is that my shift changed from when we last talked, so we may actually be in the city at the same time.

George, yeah, that's a serious PITA, though. I wonder how cumbersome the NFA process for AOWs is...

Concealed carry of a short barreled shotgun is legal with a LTCF in Pennsylvania. I'm thinking a Mossberg 500 or Rem 870 with this would be perfect. Wouldn't want on a full sized shotgun, but it'd be beautiful on a SBS.

An Andrews Custom Leather firepower rig would be awesome, except for the $500 price tag. Might have to look around.
