SAAMI Publishes 12-Gauge 1¾-Inch Cartridge Standards

SAAMI voluntary 12 gauge 1.75" cartridge standards:

If the drawings are any indication Federal's roll crimped version should come in at approximately 1.6" loaded length. Few current manual repeating shotguns, (let alone autoloading shotguns), are capable of reliable function with a loaded length that short.

Also, Federal's new shotshell entry likely the first US loaded roll crimped shot load introduced to the market in many decades.

Most interesting to me is the enthusiastic statement by Federal Shotshell Product Director Rick Stoeckel, on possible future repeating shotgun developments centered around this new cartridge length:

“SAAMI’s approval of the cartridge was a crucial step in legitimizing it within the industry,” continued Stoeckel. “Their work creates industry standards for the cartridge, and will hopefully inspire shotgun manufacturers to purposely build pump-action and semi-auto shotguns to specifically run 1¾-inch loads.”    :hmm

I expect that it is easier to make a new length of current production shell vs an all new modern shell.  If the performance does not drop off too much, then a semi-auto designed to work properly with these short shells helps with the capacity limitations.  Insert pithy gamer gun comment here.

Biggest problem with modern loading, magazine, for shotties is the shell design which dates back to the 1860's or 70's.  Paper hulls were introduced in 1877...

Factory loaded paper shotshells would be the next great innovation - years later.
