Remington 20ga special field, good buy?
« on: July 05, 2014, 04:39:49 am »
I found a 20ga Remington 870 special field for $540.  It has a 21" barrel, modified fixed choke, English style stock.  Conservatively, I would put it about 90%, some wear on the stock and trigger guard.  Could some of the more knowledgeable people on hear give their opinion on if it's a good buy or not.  Thank you.

    Buy it!
Not only is it a helluva a bird gun, also a best kept  secret for serious situations.
Leave it bone stock, make sure it fits you ( yeah that gun fit thing again) and if need, do a quality recoil pad. I am partial to Pachmyer. ( Then again I "are old")  ;)

For serious, I run slugs. Just see what that gun does the best groups with.
Also, you might consider a mid bead sight.... ( recommended highly by me btw.)

Oh damn! That 21" bbl is something else, and with the straight stock, you will have a winner in my book.

    For what its worth:

870 Special Field models will only accept Special field barrels.

Othe 870 barrels will not interchange. The Special Purpose , Express, Wingmaster 20 gauge all measure 12 3/4 inches from the ring to the back of the barrel shroud. The Special Field barrels from ring to the back of the  barrel shroud is just 11 inches.
