need info on nice antique double
« on: January 18, 2009, 11:46:08 am »
A friend gave me a lovely  16 Ga  double gun- Forehand Arms Co, damascus barrels, color case hardening, some tasteful light engraving, in really super shape- the bore looks brand new and it locks up solid. Looks hardly used.
Some initial research on the web indicates they were made by between 1890-1900, then bought out by Hopkins and Allen. Supposedly these were mostly inexpensive utility guns.   This one was not. A fine gun.

My question-  the bottom of the box lock has a thumb latch that can be depressed- what is it for? I am wondering if it frees up the lock itself, as I can see no screws holding the mechanism together.  One commercial site listed a Forehand gun as having "perhaps the most unusual box lock made".  Anyone have an idea?
Second, is there a source for black powder or low pressure loads?

 Thanks!

Figued out what the latch is for- unlike some doubles where the barrels lift right off when the fore end is removed, this one requires the latch on the receiver bottom to be depressed at the same time the barrels are tipped off.

Just remember: demascus = black powder only.  You should get some solid brass hulls from MidwayUSA and load some up!

Sounds like a sweet scatter gun, enjoy!
