Mossberg Maverick
« on: July 04, 2010, 10:27:00 am »
Can anyone tell me why the Mossberg Maverick Mod. 88 is so much cheaper than the Mossberg 500 line of shotguns?  Is it like a Remington Wingmaster vs. Express kind of thing?

If you have the 88, how do you like it?

I believe the Maverick is the Mexican assembled Mossberg, also with a little less fit and finish, just like Wingmaster vs. Express.

    A quick Wikipedia perusal-

Mossberg also markets a less expensive shotgun under the Maverick Arms name: the Mossberg Maverick 88, in blued finish, with synthetic stocks. Maverick and Mossberg shotguns share some similar parts,[6][7]  but Maverick shotguns differ in some ways, such as lacking sling swivel studs and having cross-bolt safeties instead of tang safeties. The factory warranty on Maverick shotguns are limited to one year. Maverick Arms models are assembled in Texas, rather than in Mossberg's main facility in Connecticut.

And this, just because it is, is cool. -

A unique item offered by Mossberg for the Model 500 is a line launcher kit. It uses special blank cartridge to propel a shaft with an optional floating head and a light rope attached to it; a canister hung below the barrel to hold the line spool. A test of the Mossberg 500 with line launcher by the BoatUS Foundation showed an average range of over 330 feet (100 m) with the floating head. Distances of 700 feet (210 m) are claimed for the non-floating long distance head.

My best friend owns an 88.  He abuses it.  I've shot the hell out of it.  He stuck an 18" barrel and a folding stock on it.   I've even used it for one-handed clay shooting.

It runs.  May be cheap, but it will run.

I have an 88 until I can save up for one of those sweet 930's that George has been flaunting on YouTube...

Yep, the 88 is a runner all right, some of the early models only had one operating arm but the newer ones have 2 to help with binding of the action (a flaw that early 870's had too if I remember right), not a huge fan of the trigger or safety (it should be on the tang darn it) but it will shoot what ever you feed it.  Yeah, the parts are made in Mexico  (gasp! and international gun running operation!!) but are generally of good MIM quality and should do yo well.

Pick up a used one for under $200 and throw some shot down range with it.

Or get an 870 from George and remove all doubt of quality...

Sorta ironic:  I got a Mossberg 500 used with CHOKE TUBED 20" barrel for $202.....

    But I still want a Maverick  ;D

One of the 8-shot models.......has to be 8-shot or why get one.   ;D

Sports Academy currently sells new Maverick 88s ( 26" vent rib/choke tube ) for just under $170.

I have to agree the Mavericks will run.  I will be running some Dixie Tri-Ball rounds through one soon.

By the way, the Mossberg 500 series pump shotguns, (in all the various permutations),  is the only enclosed hammer shotgun, (to my knowledge), with a safety stop on the hammer!

Here is how to check the hammer safety stop:  If you keep your shotgun is in cruiser ready, you are already aware of this. With the shotgun hammer down and chamber empty, ease the slide back just a little, (as if for a chamber check), then push the slide completely forward. If at this point you pull the trigger, the hammer will slip off the safety stop and go forward just bumping the firing pin.

The purpose to the 500 hammer safety stop is to prevent the gun from firing should the full cock notch fail to catch the sear.  This function is the same as the hammer safety stop on a series 80 Colt autoloading pistol.

That's kind of cool. I didn't know that about my 500.

I would personally not bet my life on a Maverick 88.  As of about two years ago I was working in a sporting goods store and they were still shipping with only one action arm, and as I recall, there are significant differences in the action from a 500, not just the location of the safety.  Because of the price, we did sell lots of the 88's but also had many brought back.  Problems with the safety, magazine stop, etc...  Far more than any other shotgun the store sold.  And it is worth noting that many, if not most of the guys that I did sell the 88 to were simply looking for a cheap gun to put in the trunk or closet.  Aside from the members here that are speaking for them, I doubt many see hard use.

I'd rather save up a few more bucks and get a 500 or a 590.

The current Mavrick 88 is the same gun as the 500 with a different slide arm assembly and safety. I will grant that the 88 is not as well finished and the barrel interior is not as smooth as the 500. Like any firearm - particularly low end firearms - you have to test before you trust!
