Author Topic: How are the KSGs holding up? (Read 6409 times)

I haven't seen many range reports on these things. It seems like you can actually find them for around $800 now. Since I've not been keeping up on things, how are the KSGs doing? Any of you broke them yet?

Didn't really think about one for a long time, but then I saw that Silencerco shotgun video and it made me want a bullpup shotgun. Go figure.

I think you don't see many reports about them because...well, remember the ones we looked at at the 2011 SHOT Show? I'm pretty sure those, and the ones they gave to Oleg for pictures, were all they actually produced.

I *have* seen them in stores on occasion, though. Cabela's had one, I think.

The only one I've seen in person was in for repairs because something involving the feed mechanism to the chamber had gone tango-uniform.

I've seen several in person. Have four friends with them. LGS has had one on the shelf for several weeks. My dad's is running good. He's done quite a bit of pest control with his. Lots of recoil and easy to short stroke but other than that I think there great.

There are no less than 4 of them in one of the local gun stores and even the local Gander Mountain has about a half dozen of them and there are a few other smaller places that have 1-2 in stock on a regular basis. CDNN has been advertising them in stock for the past few months so getting one for under a grand should be fairly easy (local prices are 799.00-850.00) so that whole unavailability thing has for the most part passed. Back to the OP, I ran mine pretty hard with quite a few rounds w/o a single issue. It's an extremely compact, lightweight shotgun.

I owned one for about 4 months. I had the titanium color and I bought it for about $1000. I bought it more for marketing and to draw a crowd at the gun show. I had someone that just had to have it and sold it for $1300.

When you rack the slide 15 times in a row, it really turns a lot of heads.

Production is up. Quality Control is up. KT is doing a lot better... I know a couple guys here in NC that bought KSG's recently and they are doing great.

Good. I'm glad to hear that KT may have managed to remove its cranium from its pelvis. They deserve to do well.

They deserve to do well as long as they keep those two points of contact far apart. They make neat, innovative products, that people want, and then move on and make more neat, innovative products, without actually producing enough of the previous products to anywhere meet demand.

Make what people want, and then, and only then, create new products, but only if you have, or can get, the capacity to produce them if/once they become popular.

Groovy. I think I'm going to snag one. I've not treated myself to a straight up gun for fun in a long time, and I do enjoy the hell out of shotguns.

Having a paid off mortgage is better than any gun. It essentially means you could buy 2 or more guns a month, free and clear.

My brother now has the KSG I bought. I wasn't a fan. It felt clunky, way to easy to short-stroke, jammed frequently even aside from short-stroking, and recoil was way too uncomfortable for a gun that size. And when I say it jammed, I mean it was jammed. The pump stuck forward, dead trigger. I had to hit the butt against the ground a few times to free it. My brother likes that it holds 14 shells. I'd rather have a gun that works. Awesome concept, not well executed, IMHO.

I would be curious to see how they are holding up under extensive use.

They are readily available around here now, and a buddy of mine picked one up back in April ( I haven't played with it yet). I think that he is pretty typical of KSG owners: he's taken it out to the range a few times. Blasted some birdshot through it for the lulz. A little buckshot and some slugs. Outside of the shooting sports I think that these are mostly status symbols, brought out for parades or other special events.

I know that one of the members on the forum (mattitude maybe?) had one for a while and used it enough to give a comprehensive review, but I don't think that a lot of the people that have them have chucked them behind the seat of the pickup and are using them daily.

I have not shot mine a tone so far it is holding up jest fine. I think that have put about 300 rounds through mine.

I just wish the barrel was about 6 -8 inches longer. Then you could throw 6 more rounds in there as well. Id love to be able to use it for trap but I think the barrel is too short.

I wonder if anyone is running one of these in 3-Gun competitions.

I used mine shooting clays before with just a trap thrower and it worked out just fine...just had to get used to using rifle sights vs. a bead but still got the job done. I've also used it in a few 3-Gun competitions but I was actually faster overall with my Benelli M4 w/extended tube & "ghost loading" the lifter starting out. I had my friend time me just on the shotgun portion using the KSG and then with the Benelli and I was almost 5 seconds faster even when doing a reload.

It is a fun little shotgun and with prices almost 1000.00 cheaper than they were just a year ago makes them much more attractive as an actual truck gun as most KSG owners keep them as safe queens because they paid out the @ss for theirs and don't want to scratch it. it's a shame really because they do work pretty well (the early generation guns are notoriously buggy/jammomatics so be sure of what you are getting especially if it's used).

As I understand it, the main problem with the early ones were the inner cartridge stop. The tolerances were too tight and you really had to rack it hard to get it to feed the next shell. Not something that you want to do with a short shotty, since it makes it more likely to have your hand slip off the front and end up in front of the barrel at an inopportune time.

The newer ones seem to work well. I have seen some problems feeding low brass shells.

I think the KSG is a great concept. Still waiting to hear some testimony about high usage (1k plus rounds through) and MTBF.
