Cool.   :cool    Wasn't able to witness it but I remember hearing them test the Saturn V engines outside of a little town called Picayune, Mississippi back in the day.  1966 I believe - the thundering roar was incredible even from miles away.

Great. Now I have to go play Kerbal space program again.  :facepalm but only because building one of these would put me on even more lists :neener

Saw a Saturn V launch when I was a kid. I was very far away but I will never forget that even from that distance it vibrated in my chest the same way thunder does.

Liquid fueled rocket engines are amazing when you think about how they have to keep everything balanced to turn all that energy into thrust instead of becoming a bomb or a pile of slag.

The nozzles are so hot that they have to circulate the fuel (and sometimes oxidizer) through them to keep them intact. That helps to pre-heat the fuel too.

The fuel and oxidizer have to be injected into the combustion chamber in incredible volumes and at even higher pressure than what the combustion chamber generates (or else the combustion would go back into the fuel system). Explosive mixes of stuff being pumped out in quantities to dwarf a firehose.

The only way to deliver that pressure and volume is with turbo pumps driven by some of the rockets own combustion - think about the material and engineering it takes to make a waterwheel driven by a rocket.

    It's all just spectacular.

The video at 7:30 is amazing.  The pressure pulling the vapor off everything and sucking it all down and out.  Just too awesome.

Thanks for that Jesse, you're an intelligent man  :thumbup1. My head is full of knowledge, but it's in more medical and nursey things. I don't even know how my car engine works, all of that is foreign to me.

The Rocketdyne F1 on the Saturn V, which was the predecessor to this RS-25 engine, burned just short of three tons of fuel and oxidizer per second...671 gallons.  It took over 30,000 horsepower to drive the fuel and oxidizer pumps.

I've stood right next to an F-1, everything about it is awesome.

That you can make a gazebo out of the F1 rocket nozzle is amazing. If you are ever in the area of Hutchinson KS. Then it is worth swinging by the Cosmosphere there.

The NASA Stennis Test Center where that RS-25 test took place is about 30 minutes from my home.

We can sometimes feel the ground tremble when they test.  It is in rural Hancock County, MS not too far from Bay St. Louis, MS.  There is a huge buffer area of thousands of acres around those test stands.  They permit public tours when not testing.

I have a close friend and fellow church member who is a true "rocket scientist" employed there by NASA.  We were invited guests by him for a private tour on March 8, but it was scrubbed.  His dad died.  He will reschedule.  I'll try to take some video if they allow it.

I saw a night time launch of the space shuttle from as close as they will allow members of the public.  You see it, hear thr roar, feel the rumble in your body, just amazing.

A friend who is an aerospace engineer pointed out to me that when the shuttle launched, between the liquid fuel and liquid oxygen, it was sitting on the equivalent of a 4.5 kiloton explosive.
