Suggestions for a new laptop?
« on: March 02, 2015, 06:13:29 pm »
Well, after not quite six years, I think it's time to upgrade my computer. Much as I love (loved) to gripe about my current laptop, it surfs the web and runs MS Word with zero issues. Unfortunately, that's just about all it's ever been good for. It's always been worthless for gaming. Even basic online flash games give it trouble, and I would like to be able to actually play computer games again. Nothing super high performance or cutting edge, but stuff like DEFCON, World of Tanks, and Interstellar. While I would like to go back to using a desktop, I am planning on going back to school to get a degree/certification in either business writing or technical writing, and I'm going to be doing so fairly soon, so that is going to necessitate my getting another laptop.

Unfortunately, I have no idea what the modern PC market looks like. My entire computer history has been one long line of HPs and Compaqs, but they are no longer in the market. I think Dell still makes computers, but my family has had nothing but trouble with them, along with everyone I know who has ever owned one as well as my high school (long story there). I've heard Lenovo was supposed to be quite good, but after doing a bit of research on the Superfish scandal, I wouldn't touch them with a 40-foot pole. The only other brands I've heard of of are IBM Thinkpad and Acer, but I know nothing about them.

Basically, I'm looking for a 14" or 15" laptop I can use for basic to mid-range gaming, as well as decent graphic design/publishing software. And I want to stick with Windows, since that's what I'm familiar with and I'd prefer to not have to mess around trying to get Linux or another OS optimized and ironed out.

As far as budget goes, I think I spent $650-$700 on my current laptop. I'd like to spend no more than that this time around as well.

Thanks in advance.

If you like HP's check out Costco.com.  This one should meet all your requirements.

Been looking for a new one for my wife too.  Her old one died a few months ago,  probably a bad motherboard since it won't even power on.     Since it was 5 years old,  figured it was time for a new one.   So far I'm thinking an AMD A8 or A10,  or maybe an Intel Core i5 with 8GB of RAM.   Trying to keep it in the sub $500 range.

I was almost ready to pull the  trigger on a nice looking factory refurbished HP I saw on Woot.com, but then I read a bunch of crappy reviews of their customer service if there is a problem.   Decided to play it safe and look elsewhere.   Right now I'm leaning towards picking one up on Amazon.   They cost a bit more there, but I can buy gift cards at the local supermarket and get fuel discount points, which will save me .50 a gallon the next time I fill up my truck.

I suggested Costco if you can live with there choices, as they have the best return policy I have ever found.   I buy from Costco over Amazon for that reason, and that is why I recommend them.  Of course I can mail it to relatives and have them return to an actual store if that is necessary, which is not an option for everyone.  My last two HP's were optioned out by me and shipped from HP direct to me.  That way I could get what I wanted and the price was better than off the shelf.

Costco is due to open a store here in Wichita later this year.  I have heard a lot of people like to shop there.  However, the founder's shilling for Obama is pretty off putting.
