For years I've watched TV on an old 14" portable set with a cathode ray tube screen but this week I finally entered the 21st century and got an LED HD TV.
My DVD player has a HDMI port and can do DVD upscaling to improve the picture quality so I decided to give this a go and sat down to watch Star Wars: A New Hope.
All went well until the cantina scene where Han Solo is confronted by Greedo and Greedo starts to speak. Hey presto, the English subtitles aren't appearing. The same happens when Han Solo is confronted by Jabba the Hutt. Not being such an nerd that I speak fluent Huttese these are pretty important to me. Switching the TV input back to the SCART socket had no effect until I physically disconnected the HDMI cable and I was rewarded with subtitles once more.
Has anyone else had any similar experiences with DVD upscaling? If so does anyone know how to keep the subtitles?

No. My first thought was that there was an issue with the aspect ratio, having gone to a widescreen TV but I double checked that and it was fine.
The only difference between not having subtitles and having them was unplugging the HDMI cable. I didn't even need to manually turn off upscaling, just as I didn't need to manually enable it in the first place.
