WWSD 2020
« on: March 15, 2021, 02:05:25 am »
I haven't talked about it here, because I assumed everyone had heard about it, but the boys at Inrange TV have updated their What Would Stoner Do AR-15.  KE Arms is building them including new monolithic polymer lowers.  I have pre-ordered one of the complete rifles and a couple more of the stripped lowers.

My Dad and I were talking about an AR for a survival rifle in his airplane, so I dug out an older lower that I used on my first AR build and have since stole most of the parts off of.  I threw some of the new parts on it that I bought for the new builds so that I could lend him one to try out packed in the airplane.  Then I weighed it out.  MagPul furniture is heavy, especially the CTR stock I used first.

My crappy Omni plastic lower, with Battlelink stock, a new pencil barrel PSA upper no optic was 5 lbs 7oz.  This upper weighed in under 3 lbs.  It is going on one of the KE Arms lowers when I get them probably with a Holosun red dot.  My  Aero lower, CTR stock, light weight PSA lower, 3lbs 2oz, and a Bushnell red dot with riser weighed 6lbs 8oz.  The new production WWSD rifle is supposed to weigh 4lbs 15oz with out an optic or mag.  So I actually got to with in a 1/2 lb of the WWSD over 4 years of trial and error.

The WWSD rifle has a MSRP on the pre-order of $1800 from Brownells.  The Omni with the mix of new parts and old, including a basic mil-spec trigger that I thought was okay, I have about a grand in it.  The Aero with the old upper, and mil-spec trigger, weighed just over 7lbs and I have $650-700 in it.  As the Aero is after today with a lighter new upper and a KE Arms designated marksman trigger in it, I have about a grand in it as well.  The KE trigger is amazing.  I have a Geissele SSA in the box of parts waiting for lowers and I can't wait to try it.

I have not been excited about any rifle let alone a AR for several years now, but I might break down and go to a public range to try these out as soon as these arrive.  Rather than wait for the several feet of snow to melt off my range.  I am not digging it out and I cannot run the snowblower down the trail to where it is.  I lost the shooting bench in last weeks snow, and the target stand disappeared last month.

I have watched the WWSD series, some episodes more than once.  It is a very interesting series and the KP-15 looks like a solid option for a lower, especially if you are looking for weight savings.

I keep almost buying one, but the reality is I already have a bunch of AR's and I have about 10 stripped lowers.  Not sure I need another.  But....

I bought a stripped KP-15 lower, only crappy thing is the wait on the LPK from KE Arms is about a month (they have a disclaimer saying don't bug us until after 4 weeks, even if the product says in stock and ship within 1-2 weeks). It feels like quality polymer, definitely lightweight,  going to match it to a PSA upper, Sig M4 barrel, and a 2A Armament lightweight Mlok handguard (don't know if I'll swap out the barrel with my other AR with a BA Hanson barrel for a few ounces of weight reduction). Throwing in a spare LaRue trigger, I can't wait until all the parts arrive (still have less than two weeks before I can bug them).

I ordered mine from Brownells in December between Christmas and New Years Eve.  Still waiting.  I think they are waiting to ship the rifle along with my lowers, which should save me a bit on shipping.  Trying to think on the positive side.  Also I limit checking on my order status to once a week.

Ordered a trigger and some other small parts for KP-15, from KE Arms they were accurate on shipping time.  Out of their door in about 4 weeks and I had it at the 5 week mark.

I decided to buy some "spare" lowers after the election.  Was looking for basic Anderson's, but decided after much searching to buy the KP-15s for basically the same money as Andersons.  Then the wife commented "why don't you just build them out rather than have the lowers around empty?"  I told her the price and got the go ahead so now I will have a AR for each family member including my parents.

I like the concept and have no real fault with the selection of components (although I prefer a collapsible stock for transport).  Good kit overall, I've a few KE triggers in my AR's.

    BUT.......

As there is no real stress put on the lower I've dropped the coin for a 3d Printer....

IF I can convince Mama Raptor to look at an AR.... I'm gonna try steering her towards this one.

I'd like to try one, but it hasn't really been at the top of my list to buy.   If I was going to get a lightweight AR, I'd probably go for one of the retro A1s.   Not quite as light, but just seems more fun.

I have always avoided modern military type rifles/ARs due to my failures to hit reliably with peep sites.  My astigmatism is not bad enough to be corrected with contacts, which I wore most of my life, but I can't hit the broad side of a barn twice in a row with peep sites.  All my AR's carry optical sites as primary sites and most won't have back up sites.  I almost wish I could find a set of buckhorn sites for rail mounting.

Finally received my LPK from KE, their disclaimer about bugging them went from 4 to 6 weeks. When I contacted them the short throw lever on the ambi safety was out of stock, so they gave me the option of getting both levers standard length. I was worried because their website said the LaRue trigger was not compatible, but I installed it last night and it functions fine. Total weight is 6.25lbs, Sig M400 barrel, 2A Armament handguard, Surefire light, Magpul sights, Radian charging handle, Holosun 510C.

    Nice.

I think, key word think, that KE is covering their butts and saying that things are not compatible if they have not had a chance to test each and every version of stuff.  I have heard that the tolerances might be slightly different, and that the tolerances might stack slightly differently from aluminum lowers.

    Mike,
Not to sound like an ass, but please try an AR with an optic.   The mechanical side of it is stone cold simple and reliable, given in spec ammo.    Even bumping up to larger bores.       The

I noticed issues with peep sites on a savage 99.  And my dad who also has astigmatism commented that he has issues with peep sites also.

I have and I really like the mechanical accuracy of the AR system.  The only thing about AR's that doesn't work for me is the sighting system, and with flat top uppers that is no issue.  I had an AR set up for varmint hunting with a 6-24x scope on it.  I was playing with a 3x magnifier and a red dot about 10 years ago and that will likely be my primary set up if I find a magnifier I like.

Well, I wasn't sure if you had left out "magnified" or not... a lot of people with astigmatism (myself included) have trouble with red dot optics because the dot doesn't look like a dot... it looks like a chevron (in my case pointing up and to the right).  I haven't played with them enough to find out if that 'chevron' points where I would want it to ("Bullet goes *HERE*.")

Actually, most military aperture sights are made to be used by the people most likely to use them.   Which isn't us old guys.    :doh   The problem with aperture sights is not that we can't use them - just that we can't use them as issued on the rifles.

Adjusting the size of the aperture only works marginally well if the sight is too far from the eye.  Moving the aperture closer to the eye allows the use of a much smaller aperture and essentially puts everything in the same focal plane - a variation of the effect produced by a pinhole camera.  A lens mounted aperture on your shooting glasses can be a revelation if you've never tried it.  I'm not suggesting it to replace a magnified sight on the AR type rifles or others but it shows what is possible.  Target shooters have been using such systems since the 19th century - and the physics hasn't changed.   :hmm

I like the forgiving nature of low power, low mounted optics - whether or not they have an illuminated reticle.  A couple of hunting rifles have worn old fixed power scopes like the old Weaver K4's which were absolutely bombproof in the field.  Learning how to shoot with that type of equipment lets you concentrate on the rifle and the round it shoots and all the ancillary stuff like range estimation, wind estimation, target identification and so on.

Red dots and other holographic and illuminated sights are nice as far as they go but equipment tends to either break or malfunction in direct proportion to how badly you need it to work at that moment.  Murphy's Law ?   :hmm   If it solves a specific problem that's a good thing but that invariably gives you another variable to deal with.

I got my WWSD rifle in Oct, after about 42 weeks on back order.  I heard that KE Arms had to set up and manufacture the carbon fiber hand guards, and that was the delay on complete rifles.

Weight on the complete rifle with no optic and no magazine is 5lb 9oz.  After re-reading through this thread it is a bit heavier than I thought it would be, but the balance is better than my Omni set up and I am sure it is sturdier.  I am still hoping to be right about 7lbs with a loaded mag, optic, and a bipod.

I am still researching optics.   I have not dug out my Sparc and magnifier yet, but am leaning towards a Sig Romeo of some variety  with a 4x Sig magnifier.  Holosun is also on my short list, as I have heard good things about there magnifier.  But I am also toying with the idea of a low power variable optic probably a 1-6.

I have not had a chance to fire it yet or do anything other than dry fire and weigh it.  I  now need to find a match to go shoot, that will kick me in the butt to make some decisions.   Due to dealing with a medical emergency, and the normal winter chores I have not done any shooting this fall.

I watched some of the Inrange videos from their Finnish Brutality match.  That looked crazy,  especially the trench filled with ice water.  I wonder what they had for the competitors to warm up with after that stage?

Looks like the WWSD rifles did fine.   I was surprised to see Bloke on the Range running a Bushmaster M17S.  Crazy oddball choice there.

Yup.  Bloke just posted his videos today.  He hngas several videos on the bushmaster 17s.  It basically sounds like he bought it as a joke, and now really likes it.

I did notice that everyone changed clothes after that stage, so I assume there was a warming room of some sort.  Watch polanar tactical's video of the event if you want a laugh.  They are the ones who brought the pool floaties.

What's crazy is the effort he went to to import that thing into Switzerland.   If only we we could trade them some more crappy meme guns for some Stgw 57s.
