Wired Article- The AR-15 is a gadget.

Interesting article, havne't had the time to read the entire thing yet but I thought I'd bring it to the attention of the forum.  Premise is that part of the popularity of the Ar-15 platform is that it's one of the first and few guns that is easy, cheap, and reliably customizable.

1911s generally require a bit more skilled fitting to switch parts around than the AR. Not quite the same Legoish modularity.

    The 1911 is a hobbyist's gun.  The AR-15 is a barbie doll.
CaliforniaOf course I carry a gun!  It gives me a chance against the sinners and protection from the righteous.

Yep. Any monkey with a set of tools and the ability to follow instructions can assemble an AR. The 1911 requires hand fitting, and throughout most of its life there was not the crazy level of aftermarket and custom options that are available today.

That's a key selling point to customers at work. It's a LEGO platform. Get a decent base and then build it up like you want it depending on how you want to use it. Basic carbine, CQB, mid to long range work, varmint, etc.
Right now, we're out of pretty much all of the cool guy gadgets such as Eotech's, Trigi's, and Aimpoints. Rails and grips are all b/o'd as well, save for Magpul gear.

If you wish for peace, prepare for war.

A battalion commander of the 23rd Regiment 2nd Infantry Division reported during Operation Cobra, the long awaited breakout from St. Lo (July 1944):

"I have no water, I have no chow, I have no batteries for my radio, I have no communication. My men are dead dog tired. I repeat, my men are dead dog tired. I have been given an order to attack. I am about to comply with this order. End of message."
