Title: School Me on AR-15 Mags
Post by: Raptor on July 05, 2016, 10:04:51 pm
I picked up a stripped AR-15 lower a few weeks back and am in the process of slowly acquiring the parts and tool necessary to assemble it (and possibly an upper receiver as well). Every time I've purchased a component, I've also picked up one or two AR mags along with it. Didn't plan on it, it just kind of worked out that way. Looking ahead, that actually seems like a pretty good plan considering how things might go politically in the next few months. Yes, I may be paranoid, but that's a discussion for another thread.

Anyways, to the point: I really don't know very much about all the different brands of AR-15 mags on the market. It's my understanding that PMags, particuarly the Gen 3s, are the current industry benchmark for quality, durability, and reliability, the Lancer L5 Advanced Warfighter mags are the best on the market, and that Brownells USGI mags are/were high quality as well. But other than that, I know pretty much bupkis.

Is my current understanding of Brownells, Magpul, and Lancer mags accurate? What are the other good AR mags currently on the market? What brands should I stay away from?

As always, thanks in advance.

I mostly have a mix of Magpul and USGI aluminum.    Haven't tried Lancer yet.

You should be able to find plenty in the $8-12 range.  Sometimes a couple bucks cheaper if you find a sale and buy in bulk.

Basically buy what you can at $6.99 to $10.

I've got a mix of everything, most work good with a few exceptions (promag, thermolds, which are okay, just not as durable for the price they want).

Example, I've got Pmags, both Gen2 and Gen3 that I got for $9.99 apiece.  I've got Bulgarian steel-lined 40 rounders for $16 during the panic, IMI 30 polymers for $8.99, Elancers for $9.99 (Wish I had bought a TON more).  Brownells 20 rounders for $12.99 and though they're cheap and not "Mil spec" WTFever that is, I got a bunch of Cproducts when they were on sale for $6.99 and free shipping.

Forgot to mention, my current collection consists of one 30-round Gen3 PMag, one 40-round Gen3 PMag, and 1 30-round Lancer Advanced Warfighter.

If I was in your position, I'd just go drop $100 and get some mags.

I have a pretty good amount already, but I'll probably add a few here and there as I order stuff as well.

There's a lot of retailers that do bulk discounts on Pmags that put them at an exceedingly reasonable price. I'd look for a deal like that.

I'm no AR expert, not at all, but I have been using the Mission First tactical mags in my BREN 805 and they have been perfectly reliable right out of the gate every time. Then again, the couple of old GI Colt 30 rounders do just fine, too. :)

I'd wait for the coupons from Brownells.  They usually do one or offer free shipping every week or two.  They just had a 11% discount going on for the 4th,  which balanced out their somewhat high shipping costs.    AIM surplus and 44mag.com are also good sources.

You will see P-mag 10 packs from time to time for $80-$90. That is when I buy.

I have a mix of USGI's and MagPuls...
And I'd trade them all for Lancers.    But really, this isn't an issue.  If you have a mag that is functioning fine - then it's fine.
If it starts to give trouble... Mark it, test it to verify the mag is the issue.  If it is... STOMP IT FLAT, Shoot it, Destroy it, and replace it with something that has a good reputation.

I like Pmags with the windows.  A few bucks more but I like the visibility.

All the mags I own are magpul and C products, have a even amount of both. Only mag I have had a issue with is one of my p mags. You can can the c products mags in either aluminum or steel for under $10 a mag.
