Ruger SR-556, new rifle for the AR market
« on: May 18, 2009, 06:03:01 am »
Well Ruger appears to have jumped into the AR market with a piston action version of the AR-15.  They have it on their website and there is a review of it on gunblast.com.  One interesting thing is that it has an adjustable gas flow.  IIRC  position one renders it a bolt action, then other positions for hot rounds, normal, and dirty action like the FAL.  A number of the piston conversions have a problem in that they will beat the hell out of the gas key.  Some use a once piece gas key and bolt carrier, and another claims their op rod is set up to be in constant contact  with the key.  It will be interesting to see how Ruger does it.  Ruger seems to have changed attitude, they are selling it (if you can find one) with three thirty round Magpul magazines.  I'm guessing they got tiered of seeing all that money flow into the AR market and not being able to dip in??  I've had to move and I'm near broke,  but even if I had the money I'd want to see a many K rounds of ammo torture test of it.

Pre-existing thread over in the Weapons forum, FWIW.

From what I've read in the last couple of days, the asking price is likely to be between $1500 and $1700, depending on demand and whatnot.
