Rank based on your opinion...
« on: August 30, 2016, 02:01:38 am »
I'm still looking for an AR.  How would you rank Ruger, S&W, Colt, and Del-Ton?
I asked just about Ruger vs S&W before but then saw these other brands for same price.  Are Del-ton or colt models better?  Thanks for your help.

I would rank them in that order, just as you wrote them.

    No.

Delton is not the worst, but they are bottom tier.  They don't belong in a list with the other three.

I'd put the Colt above the Ruger or S&W.

    I'd go:  Colt, Ruger, S&W, Del-ton.

    I'd go:  Colt, Ruger, S&W, Del-ton.
Colts are good... But generally over priced for no reason other than Brand.  And that Brand doesn't have the currency it used to.
    I'd go:
    1.  DANIEL DEFENSE
    2.  NOVESKE
    3.  LMT
    4.  LARUE TACTICAL
    5.  LWRC
    6.  BRAVO COMPANY
    7.  FN
    8.  SIG
    9.  S&W
    10.  Ruger

    I'd not touch a Del-Ton, CORE-15, or such...

S&W over Ruger because S&W has a better barrel.

With all due respect, George, isn't "Better" a relative term?

    As I understand it:

Corrosion resistent - S&W, because of the chrome lining.
Accurate - Ruger, because no chrome lining.
Able to shoot more varied ammo - Ruger, because of better twist rate.

Also, S&W- no brass deflector and no dust cover.  The dust cover isn't that important to most people, but the deflector might be.

Couldn't you just swap out your barrel?  Plus, with an AR, how far you are you really planning to shoot?  I figured with an AR, you're probably looking at 200 yards and under.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought the S&W sport 2 added those features...

I'll bet $10 bucks that the Sport 2 is more accurate than the Ruger.

Splitting hairs for a beginner AR shooter.  Buy the cheapest gun on George's list and you will be a happy with the gun.  I would bet $10 all of them shoot better than you do.

    I'll be that guy....

You're going to be way more satisfied with it if you build it yourself.  You'll have as good a rifle as any of those and it won't even cost very much more.  Might even be a shade cheaper.

And it's really easy.  ARs are practically like Legos.

AR's are the Adult Lego's.  I built a couple of lowers and it was very satisfying.  My next step is to build an upper.  It almost seems easier than the lower.  The only REAL challenge is knowing what you want.  There are an infinite amount of choices out there and that's probably why I haven't built my own.  Everyone has an opinion about parts but my guess that one of the most important items is barrel choice.  Everything else to me seems cosmetic.

We have a Ruger SR-556E and really enjoy it. Only has maybe 1000 round or so through it. Only had one jam, but it was an ammo problem, not the gun. We run it suppressed most of the time with a Silencerco Omega.

Also, S&W- no brass deflector and no dust cover.  The dust cover isn't that important to most people, but the deflector might be.

Corrosion resistant, - S&W because the barrel is hot salt bath QPQ SN nitride hardened, not chrome lined.  Because it is a hardening of the steel at the molecular level, it does not alter the dimensions of the bore, including the rifling.  And the corrosion protection is for the entire barrel, not just the bore.  Far more protective in saltwater environment than chrome lining.  Think -- Glock.

Also S&W because many of its models up from the Sport have a 1:8 4150 CMV barrel that is nitride treated, has mid length gas port location, AND has the very desirable Butch Obermeyer licensed 5R rifling.

Also all S&W current models, even the Sport 2 have brass deflector/forward assist and dust cover.

Ruger rifles are great, but there are many reasons to prefer S&W over Ruger for an AR, although not saying it is "top tier".

Get yourself learnt about barrels. That is the heart of the rifle. You can put a better trigger in any AR. Barrel is key. But don't overthink it. If you're shooting coffee cans at 100 yards, you don't need the Cadillac of rifles.

Speaking of Cadillacs, I'm quite pleased with my BCM upper. If you look at George's list, 1-5 are a bit misleading. You can't really rank them in that or any order, it's like Mercedes vs Audi vs BMW. They're all great. BCM isn't quite a Cadillac, but it's the best Chevy you can buy. Definitely the high end of the middle tier rifles.
I'm not saying you should use an M1A for home defense, but I'm also not saying you shouldn't.
