This is a double review.  I picked up my rifle yesterday.  It's a saiga 16" barrel in .223.   Since I want all my rifles for a certain caliber to use the same mags, I decided to go ahead and throw down the money for a Magnolia State Armory AR-15 mag adapter.  Once I got it, I was given instructions about milling a bit out of the AKs receiver to fir the adapter.  While my dremel-foo is strong, I know I needed a drill press or something.

So I contacted Nathan at MSA.  He hooked me up with a fellow named Keith over at Tac47 industries in Houston, Texas.  I ran my gun down to him and I gotta say he's got a very impressive shop and does wonderful work.  He's going to be my go-to gunsmith from now on.  He got my saiga outfitted with the  adapter AND I can still use AK mags if I take it out and stick the bullet guide back in.

The adapter allows you to operate mag-changes just like an AR.  Mags drop free and it takes all mags, including P-mags.

Pictures are grainy, deal with it.  I now own an XCR, but without the depleted bank account and the feeling of supremacy.

I can't wait to test fire the gun.

Oh, and by the way, now my AK has a bolt-hold open feature thanks to this set-up.  :clap

I think that is a BIG reason there to get this.  You can use any AR compatable mags, no? (so like, Pmags, and the odd Beta-C mag? >:D )

And you mention XCR, Rob Arms, or Remington?

Okay, if this works, I'm getting one.

I've got a Saiga custom project I'm working on now. I've not done anything to the magwell, but it has a custom aluminum handguard and Ultimak. Barrel is threaded to standard AR type and I'm going to run a Cooley brake on it in 3gun. (just because somebody has to be the odd man)

If it runs, that would be awesome. I've got buckets of AR mags and like nothing in 5.56 AK.

Especially since all of the 5.56 AK magazines I have found have been more expensive than P-mags, and probably not as sturdy or reliable. If I get a 5.56 AK, I'm going to be looking into this as well.

what was the cost of the conversion kit and what did the gunsmith end up charging you?  (i.e. all told, how much more/less expensive was this project than a bargin-basement AR-15 build?)

And how sturdy do you think the mag well/rifle joint is? Would you feel comfortable running it through a multi-day rifle class? Do you think it can handle the dust and mud of hard use?

I spent $130 on the AR-adapter and the gunsmith charged me $60.

    Smith,

I would feel comfortable running this thing through a course.  No problem.  It is ROCK solid.  No wiggle, no bob, fits in tight and flush.  The inner working of the mag releae button is incased and you never see the spring.  You can take it appart and swap sides for a lefty though.

I can take more pictres or video if you guys want to see something.

That is very impressive and cool.  All along for years I've wanted an AK or Mini-14 that would take AR mags, and figured it was a pipe dream.  Thanks much for posting your pictures and experience with it, I just might get something like this myself!   :clap

Now the question is, are 5.56mm Saigas currently available?

    Video is uploading now.

And around here you can still get them fairly cheap.  Mine I bought for $220 OTD 2 years ago.

    Ok it's working again.

And yes it is extremely cool.

I did this because AR mags are plentiful and galil orlites are not.  I still have 8 of them, but I doubt they will get used much now.  Also I like having my rifles use the same magazines.  I'm buying an RRA LAR8 soon just because I already have a FAL.
