M44 barrel pitting

I have a M44 that suffers from "sticky bolt" and I'm finally getting around to addressing the issue. Then I found this underneath the upper handguard. Rust and pitting. Damn.





Should I be concerned? Is this a bigger problem than I thought? At the least, I'm thinking I'll take the action/barrel out and clean the site with some Kroil. Any suggestions?

    The damage so far is just cosmetic. I doubt it's going to affect the integrity or safety of your rifle.

    Cleaning up the rust and applying a light coat of oil to protect it from further damage is about all you can do.

    Nonn worry, lad. She's an honest mons' work harse nae ah show pony fer a bloody fop. Scrub the lass don, throw on the slipstream in the bolt's moving parts an set yessef back te wark. That pit willna compremise a barrel maedda Slav steel. Donna needa start frettin an pamperin like Stoner made the poor thing.

    seriously, no big worry for safety or anything there, the Rooskies built those things with generous allowances fro the motherlands environment...big

    i think if i slip streamed my nagant bolt, i might hurt myself trying to keep up with it. mine's pretty slick already.

    Aye. Mine moves faster than one would ever think a Mosin could cycle. Almost unnatural and shameful.

    So is mine.  The only part where it binds up is when the bolt is closed slowly.  If the entire motion is done swiftly, there is no problem.

    There's Slipstream on my Mosins, but they're not as loose as some M-Ns I've shot. Of course, there's Slipstream on ALL of my guns...and my folding knives...and my ratchet-action tools...It's not too great on Corn Flakes though.
