Looking to get my first rifle...
« on: October 18, 2008, 09:28:31 am »
I'm currently deciding between the SIG 556 Holo and the Bushy E2S M4A3 16" Gas-Piston. I'm kind of looking for the pros n cons of each or what you guys think of each.

The Mad Ogre really likes his SIG 556.  A Bushmaster with a gas piston would be pretty equivalent, though.

I'd probably go with the SIG.  I love the ergonomics of the rifle and the fact that it is fully ambidextrous warms my left-handed heart.  I just posted in the Handguns forum about a handgun version of the 556 I saw today.  It has about a 10 inch barrel and no provision for attaching a stock.

    They're expensive.

I'm waiting for the release of the SIG 556 "classic", after the next SHOT show. It will have the original military pattern's sights and folding stock.

Piston or not I wouldn't own a Bushmaster.

I understand that they are somewhat costly, but I'd rather take function over cost.

Wouldn't that make it an SBR? Which in AZ is completely legal, as long as you pay the $200. Plus it was an upgrade that I was looking at for the future (was looking at POF 14.5 uppers).

Dragoon, under current rules it would not qualify as an SBR, as there is no provision for attaching a butt stock.
This may be considered as the true palladium of liberty. . . . The right of self defence is the first law of nature: in most governments it has been the study of rulers to confine this right within the narrowest limits possible. Wherever standing armies are kept up, and the right of the people to keep and bear arms is, under any colour or pretext whatsoever, prohibited, liberty, if not already annihilated, is on the brink of destruction- St. George Tucker, Blackstone's Commentaries

If you want the SIG 556 - Get one... but NOT the Holo version.  That's the standard 556 rifle, with the addition of a truely sucky bit of optical crap on top of it.  Get the base 556 model, or the one with the folder... and buy a different optic.  Seriously.
We had a 556 Holo at LFI some weeks ago... and we couldn't even get that POS optic to sight in.  It wouldn't hold.  It's the same thing as those cheap/crappy BSA Multi reticle units you can buy for 80 bucks.  Not worth having.  Not worth it at all.
You can get a Bushnell Holo sight, the poor man's EOtech, for about 260 and that's worth every penny.  You can get a Vortex Strikefire for 130 bucks if you need something cheaper.  Heck, a 50 dollar TruGlo is better than that Sig Holo sight.  And I'm not kidding

Yes, I totally LOVE my SIG 556.  I love it so much, Gundoctor has it and is blessing it with some desert camo Duracoat.
I can't wait to get it back.   That SIG has been a Coyote slaying monster with ballistic tips... not as precise as my Savage... but If I can call in mulitiples, I can usually get two or three with that SIG.   One of these days I'll put a can on it and really get after it.

If the weapon is manufactured as a handgun, like this version was, it is not an SBR, it's considered a handgun.  Now, if you were to put a stock on it you would be violating NFA '34 because Title 1 handguns cannot have a stock attached.

If you want a gas piston gun, pick one that was designed to utilize it from the beginning.

    Go with the Sig.

I don't suppose you could go wrong with a Mini-14. Plenty of after market parts for them, they're reliable, and easy to maintain. Plus it won't set you back too much in the pocket book either. I've had a Mini-14 for a few years now, and I haven't had any trouble out of it.

    Word.

I love mine.  It shoots a 2.25" group at 100 yards and goes bang every...single...time...I...pull...the...trigger.

It's not a benchrest rifle but it is a handy, reliable little carbine.  If I was to buy a new one I'd get the NRA edition with the 16" barrel.
