FrankenAR Build Question
« on: August 23, 2016, 11:21:36 am »
I recently upgraded my 300BLK AR to an AeroPrecision M4E upper & forearm, around the CMMG barrel from her original incarnation (pics to come soon; she's lookin' sweet).

Anyway, that leaves me with the CMMG upper reciever laying around.

I'm a gearhead; having something loose and unutilized offends me.

Sooo... there're some sales going on this week I was thinking of taking advantage of:

Stag Arms 20" Heavy Barrel:
https://www.stagarms.com/sale-20-5-56-heavy-barrel/?utm_campaign=Email+Blasts&utm_medium=email&_hsenc=p2ANqtz-_zzDxmpzI63srX0_JkHO2Y8savpzsBoHmrsRPiy57Z4Gvl43DK_zBuYEiookHD9H36u6C-Cw6LOtTkpLDQBdDv8E1twg&_hsmi=33252128&utm_content=33252128&utm_source=hs_email&hsCtaTracking=0ea35f42-041c-458f-b4f3-a91449f910f5%7C96c51593-9d5e-4ba3-8d80-02974b28c8e8

AeroPrecision 15" Keymod forearm, w/ barrell nut:

This is the same forearm I put on my 300BLK, and I'm quite happy with it (I got the M4E upper & forearm together on sale).

I'd move the BCG between the uppers, as 5.56 & 300BLK share boltfaces.

I'd probably get the MagPul MBUS's again for sights... maybe upgrade to the metal ones.  Eventually add a good scope.

The reason for the build is to add something a little more long distance, since I've got near ranges covered with the 300BLK.

The other option is to sell the upper, 'cuz I don't *really NEED* to be able to shoot long distances.  I live in suburbia, not the boondocks, and with the 300BLK I can shoot as far as I can see in my neighborhood (not that I've tried that, mind you  :whistle ).

My thoughts mostly revolve around the barrell - is Stag Arms decent quality?

The quality of the barrel is fine.  The appropriateness of a 1:9 twist for something "a little more long distance" is what would concern me.

That speaks to me that you might lean towards the 77 grain bullets more than 55/62 grain.  The 77's certainly have great BC's for longer range shooting.  And the 1:9 twist is at best marginal for bullets that length.  I would suggest you want a 1:8 or ideally a 1:7 barrel if the goal is a little more long distance shooting.

I have a 24" Rock River with 1:8.  Works best with really heavy bullets like 75 or 77gr.

Hmm. I would prefer to avoid stainless... (I'm not into shiny barrels...)

Anybody else got suggestions for reasonably priced, heavy profile barrels in 1:7-1:8?

How much of a ballistic difference am I looking at between an 18" or 20" barrel?

    Not sure what reasonable is.

This would be solid barrel.  It is kinda low/mid-priced.

This Larue would be just as good IMHO and is a bit cheaper.
