Finally gone to the dark side
« on: April 05, 2015, 06:55:58 am »
It was a GOOOOOOOOOOOOd Friday

My first foray into the Evil Black Rifle world--AR45

CNC Guns  lower
PSA lower kit
Macon Armory upper
Magpul MOE furniture
Sampson Evolution handguard
M3 grease gun magazines

figuring out sights

NEED A BAYONET MOUNT!!!!---just because

I cannot say enough about the excellent service from Rudy at Macon Armory!
I took my lower and box o' parts down there Friday morning---arrived about 9, had everything assembled and was loading magazines by 10.
I really appreciate that he took the time to go through several different models with the Mrs. to help determine what was comfortable for her.

Range report coming soon, I hope?

I've wanted a pistol caliber AR for a while, but my wants are tough to find (9mm, takes Glock mags, relative parts/tool commonality with AR-15 standards) and expensive when I do. But, if I find one, it'll get another stamp and be a shorty. Maybe put a can on it, too...

Rudy is good people.  The DI .45 uppers have to be experienced to be believed.  The recoil is nothing compared to blowback uppers, even the 9mm.

as soon as I get some sighting utensils...............or I could just shout "Aloha Snackbar" and point it in the general direction downrange

email Rudy at:   [email protected]   ***    He does mag well adapters for a stock AR lower to go with his uppers in 9mm; .40; and .45
not sure about the mags he uses for the 9mm      As I said earlier, he took the time to go through several samples with the Mrs.---she wants one in 9mm now

Wait.  This is an AR Upper that shoots .45ACP?  Are they special mags?  Glock Mags?

    It says M3 Mags.

Glock mags would be way cooler, though.

M3 grease gun mags-no modification other than squeezing in the vise. The lower is a dedicated .45 from CNCGuns. The upper is made by Rudy at Macon Armory.
He makes a magwell adapter for a stock AR lower that uses HK USC mags in .45
The 9mm setup uses a magwell adapter and Colt mags (IIRC)
He showed me a .40 rifle with a dedicated lower from QuarterCircle 10  that uses Glock mags, with one of his uppers.  Take a look at QC10

Lone Wolf Distributing makes a Glock mag lower. The BCG requires a bit of extra machining if you don't get one of theirs, or you can send them one and they'll make the cuts for a fee. No idea about quality, but it is on my timeframe to get one of their lowers eventually.

Finally got to the range today for some holiday fun
Put a Vortex Sparc on the rifle & burned through a full mag getting it dialed in
I have shot .22s with more recoil---even the Mrs. had no problems holding on target (other than the actual weight---30 rounds of .45 get heavy)
shot 4 magazines--120 rounds- had 6 feed failures; spread over all 4 mags.

When the gun was assembled, it was lightly lubed, and all magazines were checked for feeding--but we only ran 20-30 rounds through it then
All of the misfeeds look like the bolt slid over the top---the rounds were moved forward in the magazine about 1/4" -- 3/8", with marks on the brass

Federal 230 grain FMJ   I didn't have any more ammo with me to try

PS--I got the bayonet sorted out too

:thumbup1   Good looking rig.  I'd be interested to find out what's causing your FTF problems, though.   :hmm

One of the good things about going to the dark side........................you get to corrupt other people also  :thumbup1 :clap

    Mrs. 9mm
The head guy at Macon Armory was kind enough to meet us at the shop on Sunday afternoon as we returned from FL--saved a drive next weekend.
Range reports after she gets a few more magazines.......and accessories. Anybody know where I can find a white, patent leather sling?

PS----she gave me one of those good news/bad news moments last weekend.

Bad news: she likes guns better than shoes   $$$$$$$  :panic

Always thought a pistol cal AR would be a ton of fun.

Here's my Cav 5.56 build.  A1 sights, magpul green furniture to match the receiver. Surefire 300 lumen light on the side, and a feather I picked up somewhere up in the mountains.
