Charles Daly D-M4EL Carbine.
« on: January 09, 2009, 10:52:10 pm »
Charles Daly D-M4EL Carbine.  Item No.: CCDM4E16.
5.56mm Nato, 16" Barrel, 1x7 ROT, MSRP 1309.  Flat top, with removable carry handle.  Fixed front sight.  6 position collapsible stock.  Chrome lined 4150 barrel, M-4 feedramps, M-4 forend.
The rifle is a good looking gun that compares closely with a rifle that Rock River makes in the same configuration.  To be honest, the CD gun has a better exterior finish on it, looks cleaner and sharper, and retails for less money.   It's a good looking rifle.  All the guys at the gun counter remarked that it is a good looking gun.  The finish is not shiny, but not as dull as other AR rifles out there... some look greyish in color... but this is certainly all black.
We had about 150 rounds fired through it today, just testing initially for reliability.  The gun functioned flawlessly.  Accuracy, while not testing for it - was apparent.  With different loads, it was most accurate with Nato Spec 5.56mm ammunition.   Hitting to 400 yards was easy, even off hand.  Initial shooting was done with the Insight ISM-V red dot optic.
I wanted to bench it and get to work on some accuracy testing - but it was cold and windy today... accuracy testing will have to wait until it calms down.   I could have rolled forward, but I want as many variables removed as possible to see what this gun is truly capable of.  That means benched, shooting paper, measuring groups.  But in the cold wind like this - that task becomes a miserable chore.  It was hard enough getting out there shooting it.  You can see me really suffering in the video clip.   But I do that for you guys... I suffer so you don't have to.  I know, I know... I don't have to... but someone has to sacrifice for the betterment of all.
What this rifle compares to.  The fit and finish is a step above S&W's production MP15 series.  And it's a step above Rock River's gun in similar configuration.   I know, because we had couple and I put them side by side and looked hard and close.   Smoother action.
The only wart I've found is that the gun has a long heavy trigger pull with a little grit to it.  I expect this will wear in a bit and the feel will improve.  Having said that - let me say this.  It's no worse or better than any other AR-15 trigger I have felt on any AR costing below 1800 bucks.
Costing less, than but surpassing Rock River... that's a good thing.  Costing about the same as the MP15, but surpassing it as well.  Blowing away Armalite and DPMS and Bushmaster.  Those guys are not touching this rifle.
Color me impressed so far.  150 rounds fired, no failures so far.  1000 rounds will be fired total before I am through.

The sacrifices you make for us...I am truly touched.

I am liking the review so far.  Did you lube it before this round of shooting and, if so, with what?

    Speaking of AR zeros:

Question:  Does anyone have a source for the old Army 25 meter zero targets?  The one with the inverted square notch sight image in the middle and the two light X es for point of impact of 55 gr. 5.56mm and 150 gr. 7.62mm?

Who did a nickel once, but it was a two in one and one 1/8 inch out in a straight line across the 5.56 X, I moved my darn left leg dagnabit! >:(

George, how about taking advantage of your job to visually compare for us the difference between the CD and the ARs you have on hand?  Some things you could showcase are:

-gas key statking on BCG (bolt carrier group)

      -M4 feedramps

-F marked or not front sight base

      -castle nut staking

-what kind of buffer is being used

      -fit and finish of course

Nope - out of the box.  It was wet already and I just wanted to blast it.
Last night I cleaned it and slathered the bolt with Tetra.

Between the CD and the Rock River - almost identical.  The CD's exterior finish is blacker and shinier... looks smoother and cleaner.  Other than that - identical.  Even have the same markings in places.  Such as the little square on the upper.

That thing looks like its ejecting spent brass with authority.

George, also if you could compare whether or not the competing brands have the black extractor insert and/or the O-ring upgrade for the extractor, that would be helpful for 1st time AR buyers.

I agree.  1000 rounds plus, no maintenance.  2000 rounds if you have the ammo/cash for ammo.

Having seen some of the CD products of era's past already hearing the quality comparisons between S&W and RRA is impressive!

Hoping the guy from CD is still hanging around, out of curiosity what is the ETA on Delivery for a CD D-M4 right now?  Is there the back order like most other companies?  If Ogre's review is positive I'm considering dropping the green.  8)

Another 100 rounds today.  No Jams.  Did not bench it yet.  Two other guys tried it out today, The Travis and Mark from South Africa.  Both liked the gun just fine... it ran perfect.
Small distraction when a local guy came to the range with a real M-4 with suppressor.  The giggle switch is fun... but it's a huge waste of ammo with very limited applications.  The Can was the most impressive to me.  I really need one of my SIG 556.

Sounds like a great buy if you're looking for an AR.  Good quality, good looks, AND relatively cheap?  Rock on.
