Bringing New Life to a Bubba'd Tragedy
« on: December 05, 2010, 11:46:55 am »
On the used rifle rack at Jim's sits a rifle that, to a milsurp collector like myself, is a true tragedy.  A 1904 M-N obr. 91, beautiful Cyrillic writing (not sure which arsenal - I need to go back with my book in hand), barrel chopped to around 18-20", stock cut just forward of the forearn grip swell, iron sights gone, bolt knob ground into a squarish shape, and twin holes drilled into the top of the receiver, I assume to mount some sort of a scope.

They're asking $89, but it's been on that rack for at least 4 months.  I'm tempted to offer maybe $50, and then try to figure out a way to mount a red dot on it, maybe make it a brush/hog rifle.  If it had iron sights on it, I wouldn't hesitate, but without sights of any kind, I'm much more reluctant, because I can't shoot it without spending a bunch more money.

They also have a sporterized Swedish Mauser, this one with iron sights, asking $349.  If I already had anything in 6.5x55, I would have jumped on it already.

Jim's doesn't haggle on their guns...been there & tried that.  For that "rifle" I would say that the price is too high as you can get a brand new 91/30 for around a hundred dollars.  If you want a chopped 91/30 then keep an eye out for a M38.  There's also a gun show today at the Crown so you should find a much better deal there.

I used to work at Jim's, as a class 3 rep down at the wilmington store. When they got in a jam a few years back with ATFE. Jim's girls took over, now the most you can haggle would be about 10%.

I'm tempted to write down the guns and the prices I'm willing to pay for them on the back of a business card, and tell them to call me when they get tired of not selling them.

The Mosin's been sitting there since at least August; the Swede since September.  Sooner or later, getting some money has to be better than none.

I already have an M38...this would be more of a project gun, anyway.
