Belgian BAR in .308 -- Need Advice
« on: December 19, 2008, 05:00:15 pm »
(Preface:  the rumored company bonus was, in fact, issued.  Means I have a lump of cash that's unknown to the wife.  One of the presents we "knew" we couldn't afford was a rifle for my SIL.)

I believe I have an opportunity (at my LGS) to pick up a BAR -- original Belgian manufacture -- in .308 that they have on the rack for about $750.  I'll be going to visit it this afternoon.  I called to ask about something else in .308, and the guy remarked that he had a Belgian BAR.

Has factory front sight, Williams receiver-mounted peep.  Only one magazine.

My knee jerk says "grab it."

Can I get some guidance on this?

Good price?  Bad price?

And where does one pick up spare mags for it?

I see my "confessions of a broke software developer" isn't getting me any traction . . .

     ;D

. . . anyone want to comment on the BAR and its value?

I would think that that would be a good deal, asuming you are talking about the BAR that the army used in WW2. It seems to be that some company was making semi-auto ones that were going for much much more than that. I know I would like to get a BAR orginal or semi auto one of these days. If I came across one for 700-800 dollar range I would be inclined to snach it up. Though I would idealy want one in 30cal.

    Okay, I've Met The BARs

These guys have, as it turns out, three BARs.  (These are all civilian hunting rifle configurations with the swing-down magazine with a capacity of either 3+1 or 4+1.)

Two of them, original Belgian mfr, one in .308 (with original sights + receiver peep), one in .30-06 with only original factory sights.

The peep sight is top mounted, using the (rear) standard drill & tap hole set that a scope would use.

The third is recent mfr, in .30-06, lightly used, has Simmons scope mounted.

I have not yet verified whether the Belgians were assembled in Belgium or Portugal.

All of them have one mag.

    #1:  Belgian, .308 (peep) = $750.
    #2:  Belgian, .30-06 (no peep) = $800.
    #3:  Recent, .30-06 (scope) = $900.

The wood on #3 is excellent.

#1 and #2 have the scrollwork on the receiver, with an elk's head on the left side and an antelope's head on the right.  #3 has no embellishment on the receiver.

They are all in good shape, with #1 good, #2 better, #2 best.

I'm drawn to the #1 (.308) 'cuz I like iron sights, and receiver peep gives a nice long sight radius.  I'm kinda torn between #2 and #3, 'cuz a scope gives you better accuracy at range, while irons are pretty much immune to all the standard scope failures.

    So . . .

With all that new data, any thoughts?

Wow.  This would be a tough choice for me as I am a big fan of the Browning BAR.  I guess I would get one of the .30-06 rifles but it would be hard as I am also a big fan of the .308 cartridge.  You can't go wrong with any of the three you list.

Find a good jeweler for when your wife finds out.  :)

put half down on the 308 and half down on the 06 and skip a few meals over the next few months, mowe lawns and get a newspaper route,  then take the two new friends home =)
