Anything I should be looking for
« on: January 17, 2014, 03:50:15 pm »
Gentlemen,

I'm going to look at a little Ruger 10/22 for my Dad

Anything I should look at closely?

The last one he had (the one I learned to shoot on) was pretty much bulletproof (pardon the pun) I don't remember any jams or misfires, just thousands of rounds sent downrange at gophers, pop cans, and bottles of water.

This one is supposed to be brand new, so I don't foresee any glaring issues, but wanted to consult you guys.

Thanks

You might consider replacing the bolt hold open.   The stock ones suck.  Also the newer ones come with plastic fire control parts.  They work ok,  but they seem flimsy and cheap.  I replaced mine with a complete Volquartsen unit.

Outside of really obvious abuse or neglect, I can't think of much.

The only problem I can recall ever having with mine was some finickiness when I installed an aftermarket barrel, due to the tighter chamber.

The BHO/release sucks on the 10/22. That would be a great thing to switch. Trigger would be #2 in line. Maybe sights?
