Any Experience with the VEPR?
« on: January 03, 2013, 02:46:22 am »
Finally got to handle one today - color me VERY impressed - single best AK I've ever played with.  I'd like to know though experiences of anyone whos actually had trigger time.  The one I saw was unmodified with a 10rd mag and unchanged in price since before the rush.  Any feedback?

I've got a .223 VEPR-K.  Paid about $600 for it 8 years ago.   Probably would cost way more than that today!      As you said, it's about as good as you can get in the AK family.   It was one of the ones that Robinson imported and converted with the somewhat funky black plastic furniture.    Some people don't like them and prefer the more traditional look,  but I don't mind it.   It kind of grew on me after awhile.   Accuracy is very good,  just as good as I can get with an AR.

It did have some trigger slap when I tried it with Wolf .223,  but for some reason it didn't have any when I tried higher quality brass cased stuff.   Sort of weird,  didn't expect that at all.

I had a Vepr 12 come through the shop not to long ago. The fit and finish was great, the gun was beautiful. Unfortunately the damn thing couldn't make it through a mag without some kind of failure. I cant speak for the rifle or for one after break in period but the shotgun was a heart breaker.

I had one and sold it back in 2006 for like 500.  It was a great gun but was too heavy for me.  Also I didn't like the sights as they were too hard for me to use.

I think I still have a 30 round mag here some where.  If the gun is around $600 I'd definitely buy it.

Just commenting on what I've seen on the various AK forums I am on:  The Vepr's have been very good quality, accurate and reliable.....except for the shotguns.

There was a few sales a month ago that sold off craploads for about $500 apiece.   Assuming a 10 round magazine don't bother you (or are willing to convert it) they're damn good guns for the price.

I have a Vepr-K that is just startling as far as accuracy is concerned. It will do 2 or  sub 2 MOA with Hornady 7.62x39 ... there was also a time back in the day when Wolf put out a lot or two of ammo that was oddly consistent where it would put 5 rounds in about 2", but I've not seen that level of consistency with Wolf since then.

With that gun, the limitations are clearly the ammo, the sights and the shooter, not the mechanical accuracy of the gun. It's a great AK, but a little nose-heavy.

Thanks for the feedback guys.  Even before the rush I saw them for $800 and even 900-100 for the 308 ones.  This one is unmodified - & I think that's why its still on the shelf.  Every uneducated Joe doesn't want to pay $800 for an unmodified AK when they can pay 1500-2000 for one.   :shrug

I'm hoping that disinterest in everything non-tac will leave it on the shelf till I can get the scratch to put it on layaway till tax returns.

If it is NIB, under the current climate, I would put it on plastic. Run the math on how much interest you'll pay between now and payoff, add it to the price. It will still be a good deal.

Or can you put the layaway downpayment on CC? That would be even cheaper.

Also, TWS now does a rail system for the front that is VERY well made, slender, and light. Gabe Saurez's outfit, One Source Tactical, also has (or had) folding stocks for them that accepted standard mil AR stocks (mine currently has a CTR). If it has the side rail, you can also get one of RSR's modular optics mounts.

    You should buy this gun.

I really liked it.  If I had plastic I'd have already brought it home.  So its "good" I don't...   :confused

I would go ahead and get it, even if youhave to borrow.  The interest for 3 months is negligible, and you are lucky it is still on the shelf now.

I gotsa question:  what caliber?  Since "unconverted" has been mentioned I assume 7.62X39?

I just was going to mention because supposedly the .308's will use M1A magazines if the mags do some heavy modification, and the 54R models only go to 10 rounds and about the same length as a 20 round (actuall a hair longer) AK magazine.

My .223 uses modified AK74 mags.  Just had to replace the follower.

The one I found is a 7.62x39 unmodded.  Then this AM J&G's gets modded ones for $900
