You will also have to be careful because the newer weights are not formulated the same as the old ones.

Another option, your local dump or recycling center should have a location where folks can dump off old car batteries, (for a fee)   I've picked up 10 for free before, just threw them in the back of the truck and no one said nothing. Drained batteries, flushed with plenty of baking soda and water and cracked the case. Got 20+lbs of lead out of each one....

I always understood that battery lead was no good for bullets due to the calcium content.

I'm getting into bullet casting. There are a lot of mom and pop type tire shops in my area and I'm sure they recycle wheel weights to scrap metal recyclers rather than give them away. Anybody have an idea how much would be a fair price to offer?

It's getting harder to find places like these that don't already have an arrangement in place.  I tried calling and visiting around a few years ago, a low percentage thing.  Called about ten places to find one who let me come by and buy about 3/4 of a 5 gal bucket for $20.  That was some nasty work rooting the wheel weights out of the bucket, in between the road dirt, tire stems, and cigarette butts that were in that bucket.   
Do be careful of the new zinc ones, you'll notice they look different and feel lighter, and they will float to the top of your melt.  If you do drop any in your melting pot, get them out of the melt before they do melt or it'll ruin whatever's in the pot.

Watch out for razors and other sharp stuff in ww buckets i cut myself pretty good last summer digging in a bucket thay tend to end up as trash cans for odds and ends.

I personally avoid battery's thay can release some pretty nasty gases.

I've stopped chasing wheel weights.  I got my last free ones 3 years ago.  It isn't worth it once you figure in the time it takes to acuire them and refine them into something useful. 

I run two dutch ovens for cleaning up lead.  When I fire them up I generally do 400-600 lbs.  That happens about 15-20 times a year.  Most of what I ingot up gets sold to Precision cast in Murray, Utah.  I personally use a several hundred to maybe a thousand lbs a year.

But I have a good source, as long as I take ALL their lead, cash on the barrel.  So, I have found an outlet for the 90% I don't need.

And so I will hate you forever or until such time as you start packing up some flat rate boxes and spreading the wealth. 

Seriously, my alloy cost about $2.10/lb delivered per 1000lb.  I once you add time and fuel together with paying for WW's it is pretty close.  Not worth the difference in my circumstances.

You may have some buyers here for some of the 90% you don't need. Murray doesn't need 100% of that 90% do they?

And yeah, ahhhahaa. Flat rate boxes. Heheheh. Make them work for it.

Can you make a mold of the exact size and shape of a USPS flat rate box? Heck...would you need to put it in the box? Just stick a shipping label and postage on the lead cube ...

I have the same arrangement as Norseman. 

I wouldn't bother with batteries because of the hazmat.
