Magnum Rifle Primer Considerations

So I ordered 10k small rifle primers and when they got here I noticed they're magnum primers. Do I need to alter my .223 Rem loads in order to use the magnums? In general, what effect will they have on rifle loads?

    To be safe I'd work up from starting loads again.

    It's my understanding that they're generally intended for use with ball powders which tend to be a little harder to ignite. They're definitely going to make for some slightly higher initial pressures compared with non-magnum primers.

    At starting load levels it shouldn't be an issue in an AR, though?

    In handgun loads the general rule I learned was to reduce any established load by 5% and work up when switching to magnum primers. In bottle-necked cartridges the figure I recall was 10%.  As a rule, starting loads are about 10% below max loads (unless you use a weird powder like H100) so start loads from the book should be fine.

    YMMV, IANAL and free advice is worth what you paid for it.

    Using AA2015. Never used the powder before but it was cheap and available in 8lb jugs.

    Ball powder but at the fast end of the spectrum. Definitely start at min and work up.

    I believe that a number of 5.56 loads call for a magnum primer.  What manual are you using?  Lately I've been using Hogdon's & Alliant's web sites for load development and not only are they up to date but they have a lot of different projectiles to choose from, but other than that I use the Speer #14 manual.

    Jesse hit it square with reply #6.   :)   Magnum's are a bit better choice with this powder if you're going to be doing any shooting in cold weather anyway.  And winter is coming on.
