30.06 Expander ball question
« on: November 19, 2008, 09:37:31 pm »
I've read two different statements regarding the use of a carbide expander.  One said it requires no lubrication the other says reduced lubrication.  Which is correct?

If I still have to lube the inside of the neck I see little use in changing.  If it relieves me entirely of this step I'll order one tomorrow!

Lube is still needed in my opinion.  But just a slight amount every 3rd or 4th case.  At least that's how I do it.  With the first one you lube, you'll note very easy operation as the ball goes through the neck, as you size more cases after that, you'll notice the drag increases with every case you don't lube.

I've found that the above method is very satisfactory.

This may be considered as the true palladium of liberty. . . . The right of self defence is the first law of nature: in most governments it has been the study of rulers to confine this right within the narrowest limits possible. Wherever standing armies are kept up, and the right of the people to keep and bear arms is, under any colour or pretext whatsoever, prohibited, liberty, if not already annihilated, is on the brink of destruction- St. George Tucker, Blackstone's Commentaries

I hate cleanin lube from in side the neck of case. So use "LEE Restzing Lubricant" or LEE Collect-die.

I lube the inide of the case neck with Imrerial Resizing Wax and a Q-Tip.  After the cases are resized, I put them back in the tumbler. I clean out the flash holes with a nipple pick. Yes,it's labor-intensive but it let's me spend time with my wife while she watches  her silly tv shows.  ::)

I just dip the case mouth in powdered graphite; it works great to lube the expander.  I use this approach for .223, .270. .308. and .30-06.  It has worked fine for the 30 years I have been reloading.

Before this step I spray all cases with case resizing lubricant (Hornady).

Cases are cleaned before (to protect my sizing die) and after (so there is not problem with chambering) resizing.
