Flattened primers, imprinted case bases, split primers, primers that are loose after firing, gas jet cutting on case base, or breech block face, soot around primer pocket...

Yeah, I do remember that about the flattened primers. But not about the other stuff. Very good to know. Thanks, Sean!

Flattened primers can also be indicative of a headspace issue, or just part of normal operation for some (high pressure) rounds.

Personally, I wouldn't go over published max loads until you're really sure what you're doing and have access to at least a chronograph.
YUP.  NO CHRONO, NO TESTING.  It will be nearly useless to do so.  A good reliable base model chronograph is under 100 bucks these days.  GET ONE.  Tell me you know how to "chono-map" a load, and then we can proceed.

I know it sounds hash, and o1a is right about 296 being forgiving on the top end as a general rule, but I still HIGHLY discourage you from pursuing this without a chrono.
This may be considered as the true palladium of liberty. . . . The right of self defence is the first law of nature: in most governments it has been the study of rulers to confine this right within the narrowest limits possible. Wherever standing armies are kept up, and the right of the people to keep and bear arms is, under any colour or pretext whatsoever, prohibited, liberty, if not already annihilated, is on the brink of destruction- St. George Tucker, Blackstone's Commentaries
