Buckshot load data: Fiocchi standard vs magnum primer
« on: April 07, 2021, 02:24:51 am »
Recently Ballistic Products' Load Of The Week featured a rather eye opening comparison of ignition strength of the Fiocchi 619 primer and the new Magnum version.  All current 12 gauge primed 3" & 3.5" primed Fiocchi hulls come with the Magnum version.

The first two loads clearly illustrate the greater brissiance and hotter burn of the Magnum primer in comparison with the previously provided 616 primer. Indeed these show how just a few grains of Longshot powder separate a load within SAAMI standards and a load exceeding the MAP.

Of greater interest to me are  Load#11036 and Load#11039.  These buffered loads are adjusted to the primer strength.  Both are 1.5 ounce loads of  #1B (Eastern, now American standard, AKA, Western #5 Buck.)*  This 656 grain load contains 16 pellets in layers of 2, using the BPI MG-42 wad - also available from Precision Reloading as the Gualandi 12 Ga Super G wad.

 I would observe:      :hmm

With two .30" pellets plus wad petal thickness of approximately .04" x 2,  all told adding up to .680", this load would properly fit Extra Full chokes without over compression.  Pattern testing this load would then invite a comparison of the results with Improved Modified through Extra-Full choke constrictions.

I suspect few shotgunners today have even heard of fitting buckshot to your choke.

I might be inclined to do my typical testing routine where I start with a cylinder bore first and then progress to tighter chokes.  I have occasionally found a surprise or two that way as some loads just seem to shoot well without getting jostled too much at the end of the ride down the bore.   :hmm
