Title: Handloading, what equipment do I need?
Post by: THE NORSEMAN on January 08, 2009, 12:06:35 am
Some simple guidelines here folks-

1-300 rounds per month?  A single stage press will work fine.  Set ups will run from 100 to 500 dollars.

3-500 rounds per month?  Turret press is the ticket.  Generally cost 250 to 500 dollars.

500-1000 rounds per month?  Time for a progressive unless you have a lot of free time on your hands.  This type of equipment will run somewhere between 400-700 dollars.

1000+ rounds per month?  Time for a serious progressive set up with a case feeder most likely.  Costs to set this up will run from 500 to well over 1000 dollars.

Tumbler?  Very close to mandatory.  Unless you have a lot of time to spend cleaning cases.

Chronograph?  Personal choice here, but nice.  If you like to "push" things?  Make it a mandatory piece of equipment.

Which manual?  As long as you have AT LEAST two, preferably three or more for cross checking data, you'll be fine.  Make sure at least one is a recent edition, powder formulations can be changed by manufacturers at any time.

Dial calipers.

We can discuss specific preferences in the forum, but the above information gives you a good starting point.
