Full-body, push through sizer for .308?
« on: August 20, 2009, 02:56:05 pm »
Hello, all...

Does anyone know of an available die to completely size a .308 Winchester case? I am looking for a push through sizer, like the new Redding .40 die, that takes the whole case completely through the die.

Of course, one for .45 ACP would work well, too.

Any suggestions?

How does that work on a tapered or bottlenecked cartridge?

    I'm wondering that myself.

You can do this, but it will only size the last 3/8" or so of the case.  You will still need to full length resize the case in a separate operation.  I the best way to get an die like this it to make one from a Lee carbide .45 ACP die.  The only part of the die that sizes the case is the carbide ring.  You could probably modify the ram of a Lee bullet sizing punch to push the bullet through.

The die is about $20. The punch cost $2.50.

Doesn't a small base die do the same thing?

A small base die doesn't reach the last little bit of case.

    EXACTLY!!!

I want to resize the entire case, including the case head.

If you've actually stretched the case head much more than about .002, you're running too much pressure, and I'm not aware of a chamber tight enough that the .002 is that critical clear back by the case head.
This may be considered as the true palladium of liberty. . . . The right of self defence is the first law of nature: in most governments it has been the study of rulers to confine this right within the narrowest limits possible. Wherever standing armies are kept up, and the right of the people to keep and bear arms is, under any colour or pretext whatsoever, prohibited, liberty, if not already annihilated, is on the brink of destruction- St. George Tucker, Blackstone's Commentaries
