7.62x39 loads for Ruger Mini 30?
« on: July 27, 2010, 09:15:41 pm »
I have an older Ruger Mini 30 (1999 manufacture) that I have recently scoped with the intent of using it this year to hunt deer/boar up to 150yds.

I used Winchester white box FMJ to sight in the rifle and was shooting pie plate sized groups at 100yds.

The scope, base and rings were are all solid and the bore was clean.

After discovering it had a .308 bore, I loaded up some 110gr .308 Hornady VMax bullets using Reloader 7 and some clean once fired brass (what I had around the house...I have 7.62x39 dies but I never reloaded it because ammo was always so reasonable).

Groups shrunk to 4".

I fully realize this is not a target rifle but I figured it would do better.

Why would Ruger sell a rifle with a .308 bore when there is no factory 7.62x39 loaded with .308 caliber bullets???

Does anyone have any accurate Ruger Mini 30 handloads they could share?

Thanks in advance for any input.

They used that bore size because of economic reasoning from what I know, as for accurate handloads, sorry I'm no help, never loaded for one.
This may be considered as the true palladium of liberty. . . . The right of self defence is the first law of nature: in most governments it has been the study of rulers to confine this right within the narrowest limits possible. Wherever standing armies are kept up, and the right of the people to keep and bear arms is, under any colour or pretext whatsoever, prohibited, liberty, if not already annihilated, is on the brink of destruction- St. George Tucker, Blackstone's Commentaries

No American ammo is .308? I thought Remington's were .308 diameter?

Anyway, sorry, no loading experiance for that round, but the reason Ruger went .308 (I heard) was because there wasn't much for .311 bullets at the time, and .308, which are easily found, could be used.
