Title: .45 ACP reload
Post by: hab492000 on November 26, 2010, 11:30:26 pm
I am moving from hand loading revolver (.357) to my .45 ACP.  Any advice on powder selection?  Thank you.

I use Unique for all my pistol loads right now, because it gives me one powder for all my sidearms.  Messy when it burns, but it cleans up easy enough, and works fine in my 1911.

I mostly use Winchester Super Field. It's cheap, and burns pretty clean. I've used Universal a lot as well but I always get a few unburned flakes in my gun, and it doesn't meter that well in my powder measure.

Unique or W231, plus many others.  I started with Unique for pistol loads, switched over to W231 because it metered better, and several years later now may be switching back to Unique.  I like W231, but Unique is even more versatile than W231.  I reload for shotgun now too, and Unique can do that as well as handgun.  Unique can even be used for many rifle cast bullet loads at reduced velocities.  I'm putting off making a decision until I use up most of my W231 but I may just buy a keg of Unique the next time I need to re-stock powder.

I always used Titegroup when loading .45acp.  Had good results with it.

My favorite for standard auto pistol loads is Power Pistol. Meters very well, burns clean for 9mm and 45 ACP. PP has a burning rate similar to Unique, but doesn't have the problems with metering well through powder measures Unique does.

You might want to take a look at Bullseye also. There are quite a few loads out there for it and my Kimber likes it :clap
