.223 - need loading recommendations
« on: August 16, 2010, 06:29:02 pm »
I think I'm about done getting new guns for a while.

I think.

I just put a down payment in on an older Ruger Mini-14.  Probably pay it off towards the end of the week.

I already know these aren't tack-drivers, but they are fun plinkers.  And it was a good price.  Besides, I have almost 3 coffee cans of brass.  I needed a gun to go with all that brass.

So, to all of you .223 shooters, what is a good powder/bullet combination?

I like H335 or BCL-2 behind a bulk Hornady 55 grain pill myself.
This may be considered as the true palladium of liberty. . . . The right of self defence is the first law of nature: in most governments it has been the study of rulers to confine this right within the narrowest limits possible. Wherever standing armies are kept up, and the right of the people to keep and bear arms is, under any colour or pretext whatsoever, prohibited, liberty, if not already annihilated, is on the brink of destruction- St. George Tucker, Blackstone's Commentaries

I use the max load of 27.5 grains of BL-C(2) under 55 grain jacketed bullets, OAL = 2.200" to match the cannelure.  I like it in that it has always worked in my Bushmaster AR and never jams.  The only reason I might not recommend it is that it's not the fastest load for 55 grain bullets.  In my 16" AR, I can get 3050 fps out of S&B commercial FMJs.  Working up to the max load of BL-C(2), I have never gotten the muzzle velocity over about 2950 fps.

I like it and I'll keep using BL-C(2), but I've heard good things about Varget and someday maybe I'll get around to working up a load with it.
