General Firearms Discussion / Re: AR 15 safe/fire selector

Can you contact the manufacturer and ask them?    It could  be a safety issue ----ooops,  double entendre NOT
intended;  I mean,  it might actually cause unintended discharge if something is wrong inside.

General Firearms Discussion / AR 15 safe/fire selector
« Last post by KevlarSmitty on November 06, 2020, 07:29:13 pm »
I am no virgin to the AR 15, but I'm not a gunsmith either. I've operated/owned several, but just bought one for my son that has me wondering what's going on. Every rifle I've operated does not allow you to select the "safe" position unless the bolt is charged. I just bought an American Tactical Omni Hybrid rifle that allows the selector to go to "safe" even without the charging the bolt. Function test was fine, was wondering if the lower was designed this way or if there's something faulty, first time I've experienced this scenario. Thanks

Gunsmithing and Weapon Repair / Re: New grips

As C says, as long as you've finished the grips inside and out with a good penetrating oil, you should be fine.

Lots of coats.

There's a considerable number of historic handguns that came equipped with oiled wooden grips from the factory and wore them for years without any significant problems.  Sometimes they were stained and varnished.  I guess the point is if the grips are well made, well fitted to the gun and properly secured they are likely to last quite a while.  Hard use and abuse will take its toll over time but I've seen guns treated like that where the metal parts were in worse shape than the wooden ones.   :shrug   Enjoy you handiwork and decide later if stabilization is something you're interested in doing.   :coffee
