Looks interesting, sort of like Crimson Skies. Did they do the usual crap of making the pilots all 14 years old though? I hate that.

It's really a shame that animated films are not made more often outside of Japan. It really allows for some good storytelling, but it sucks that most of it is burdened with that annoying anime art style and all the other assorted stylistic elements that detract from it.

Never seen the movie, but there is/was a Sky Crawlers video game for either GameCube of Wii (not sure, it's been a while) that was really good. Innocent Aces, I think it was called.

Usually all the old salts are either dead or relegated to being in command. Sort of like how only teenagers were left to fly Kamikaze missions at the end of the war in Japan.

Live-action Attack on Titan movie. It's gross.

Remember how we were talking about their weird hangups with sexuality? There's a scene where one of the female characters is hitting on one of the male characters. She's coming on, ah, really strong (as an aside, if you're a single mom, opening with "will you be a father to my child?" is probably guaranteed to scare him off). But her terrible game notwithstanding, she's hitting on him. He reacts like he's about to get tentacle raped, recoiling in horror when she touches him.

It's a stereotype I've seen in more than one Japanese show.

I actually liked the Attack on Titan animated series. I don't think I'd want to see it in live action though.

The trailer was actually better than I expected. I did think the ODM gear and CGI looked a little crappy. That kind of thing works better in animated form. Also, would it have been so hard for them to hire some foreign actors? In the animated version, Mikasa is the only Asian in the cast. I also liked the scenery and architecture in the anime version better, everything sort of looks like castles and Bavarian ski lodges.

Most of it is absolute crap. So far, I've found about 5 or 6 of them that I liked. Usually it's because those are closer to US Made stuff in their style and plotting. Even then, I think they would be better if they completely eliminated the horrible art style and some of the style elements that are usually present in anime (disjointed stories, those random moments when the animation gets all weird when the character is yelling about something, etc.)

For some reason, people that are at least 5 to 10 years younger than me seem to like it more. Maybe it was because it didn't start to become widely available over here until I was in college and I never watched it when I was younger.

Well... there is a drastic difference in anime that is marketed to kids, and what is marketed to adults as serious entertainment.

Watch just about anything by Hayao Miyazaki, and you'll get what I mean - Nausicaä (Valley of the Wind), The Castle of Cagliostro, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away... They're almost universally ranked up with there with some of the finest American films. Add to that films by other directors, like Graveyard of the Fireflies (which, from what I've read, will put even the hardiest soul under the couch and sobbing) and other, serious adult films (Appleseed, for instance, which I've posted scenes from before), and you don't get the seriously wonky eyes, the comedic background effects, and all the other whatnot that tend to drive away the American viewer.

Much like American animation, there are sometimes you can only achieve your artistic goal by using animation - whether hand drawn or CGI.

Looks pretty serious to me... Masume Shirow's work tends to be heavier stuff, too, than say, Cowboy Bebop which - while a cool series, and handles some interesting issues and moral dilemmas - takes itself a little more lightly.
