Title: Oh, the Japanity!
Post by: aikorob on August 25, 2015, 05:38:50 pm
You could make an entire separate thread entitled "Oh, the Japanity!" and fill it with weirdness.

No worries.  The weirdness thread, like Duncan and/or Connor Macleod, is immortal.  Japan is a whole other animal.

Hey, I like Babymetal! They rock! The first mix of death metal and j-pop. This song is about chocolate...seriously. :)

Another great new Japanese rock group, Band Maid, far more "standard" metal.

Their "Nazi Fashion" trend is rather bizarre to say the least.
They've been teaching historical revision very heavily, especially concerning WWII and their role in it, for quite a long time now.

That video was from one of the stranger animes that made it over here. However, the detail in the drawings of the various armored vehicles is quite good.

THIS is a much more gun related anime...actually that's all it's about. It's called "Upotte!" for those who don't want to mess with Hulu - apparently there is an English version out there somewhere.

Gunslinger Girl is excellent, the first season, but Episode 2 makes little sense, replay of the first one. Get through that and it becomes more interesting. Netflix has or had the series in English. It's set in Italy, and the girls are orphans of various kinds given upgraded cyborg bodies and "washed" minds. Their handler is the closest thing to a friend they have. In one episode, Claes, (dark haired girl), tries to shoot accurately with that vp70 stocked subgun, but has difficulty. Her handler tells her in disgust she might as well stay on the range all night until she can get it right. So, she does.
Weapon detail is usually pretty good in most good Japanese anime,. They can never touch the real thing, so they have some of the best fake/airsoft "fire"arms on the market today, getting as close as they can. Gunsmith Cats was another one I haven't had a chance to see, where one of the heroines gun of choice is a CZ 75B.

That's another thing I hate about anime.  Why do all the crazy ultra skilled assassins have to be teenage girls?    It's such a tired cliche.

I just want them to be adults for a change.    Sure there is the occasional one like Cowboy Bebop, for the most part it's always teenagers.  Where the hell do these kids find the time to learn all these crazy skills?  Especially when they are also attending high school and constantly having stupid relationship drama?

Looks interesting, sort of like Crimson Skies.  Did they do the usual crap of making the pilots all 14 years old though?  I hate that.

It's really a shame that animated films are not made more often outside of Japan.   It really allows for some good storytelling, but it sucks that most of it is burdened with that annoying anime art style and all the other assorted stylistic elements that detract from it.

Usually all the old salts are either dead or relegated to being in command.  Sort of like how only teenagers were left to fly Kamikaze missions at the end of the war in Japan.

Live-action Attack on Titan movie.  It's gross.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=InF16sp7J0M (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=InF16sp7J0M)

Remember how we were talking about their weird hangups with sexuality?  There's a scene where one of the female characters is hitting on one of the male characters.  She's coming on, ah, really strong (as an aside, if you're a single mom, opening with "will you be a father to my child?" is probably guaranteed to scare him off).  But her terrible game notwithstanding, she's hitting on him.  He reacts like he's about to get tentacle raped, recoiling in horror when she touches him.

It's a stereotype I've seen in more than one Japanese show.  :scrutiny

The trailer was actually better than I expected.  I did think the ODM gear and CGI looked a little crappy.  That kind of thing works better in animated form.   Also,  would it have been so hard for them to hire some foreign actors?   In the animated version,  Mikasa is the only Asian in the cast.   I also liked the scenery and architecture in the anime version better,  everything sort of looks like castles and Bavarian ski lodges.

Most of it is absolute crap.  So far, I've found about 5 or 6 of them that I liked.  Usually it's because those are closer to US Made stuff in their style and plotting.  Even then, I think they would be better if they completely eliminated the horrible art style and some of the style elements that are usually present in anime (disjointed stories, those random moments when the animation gets all weird when the character is yelling about something, etc.)

For some reason,  people that are at least 5 to 10 years younger than me seem to like it more.  Maybe it was because it didn't start to become widely available over here until I was in college and I never watched it when I was younger.

Well... there is a drastic difference in anime that is marketed to kids, and what is marketed to adults as serious entertainment.

Watch just about anything by Hayao Miyazaki, and you'll get what I mean -  Nausicaä (Valley of the Wind), The Castle of Cagliostro, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away... They're almost universally ranked up with there with some of the finest American films.  Add to that films by other directors, like Graveyard of the Fireflies (which, from what I've read, will put even the hardiest soul under the couch and sobbing) and other, serious adult films (Appleseed, for instance, which I've posted scenes from before), and you don't get the seriously wonky eyes, the comedic background effects, and all the other whatnot that tend to drive away the American viewer.

Much like American animation, there are sometimes you can only achieve your artistic goal by using animation - whether hand drawn or CGI.

Looks pretty serious to me... Masume Shirow's work tends to be heavier stuff, too, than say, Cowboy Bebop which - while a cool series, and handles some interesting issues and moral dilemmas - takes itself a little more lightly.

Seems like Shininchiro Watanabe has been behind most of the ones that I have liked.   That guy knows how to make a good show,  and he goes the extra mile to get the gun details right.  For example,  the serial number matches in every single closeup of Spike's Jericho 941 in Cowboy Bebop and the headstamps on the cartridges are correct.

Here is my list of the few animes that I have liked.  For the most part,  I saw them on Adult Swim, so I'm not sure if they are edited versions or not.

Cowboy Bebop:   This one is absolutely awesome.   Great work on the gun stuff.  The final shootout where Spike assaults the syndicate HQ is magnificent.
https://youtu.be/x_ll_l1o7t4

Samurai Champloo:  Another one from Shinichiro Watanabe.  Nice road trip story around feudal Japan with lots of cool sword fights.

Blood+:  Kind of hard to describe.  Sort of reminds me of Highlander mixed with Blade.   A mysterious girl, her bodyguard, and adoptive family fight to stop a long lived conspiracy of Vampires trying to take over the world.

Ghost in the Shell:  Cyborg supercops work with a team of hackers to fight crime in a somewhat dystopian cyperpunk future.

Sword Art Online:  I mentioned this one in the Internet Weirdness thread.  I wouldn't recommend it unless you play MMO's,  but it is interesting if you do.  I thought the concept of a VR version of World of Warcraft where you can really die provided a good background for the story.  Overall I would say it was good, but it has some annoying anime tropes that ultimately keep it from being great.   You can skip the second half of the first season,  that drags on and takes a turn for the creepy.   It gets better again in Season 2.

Attack on Titan:  Sure, the premise is somewhat preposterous, but it makes up for it in atmosphere and good production values.

Fate Zero:  Been watching this one on Netflix, and I'm about 2/3 through.   It is set during the late 1990's and covers the events of the "4th War for the Holy Grail".  Every 60 years,  7 mages are selected to fight for the grail.  They do this by summoning various legendary heroes (King Arthur, Alexander the Great, Gilgamesh, etc.)  and with their own skills.  It is somewhat violent, but like Cowboy Bebop, there is also some great gun action.   One of the mages, Kiritsugu Emiya,  actually bears a striking resemblance to Spike.  He's not as talented at the magic stuff, but he makes up for it with technology and cunning.  One interesting thing is that the story is somewhat interwoven between all the main characters.   You can't exactly pick one to root for.  They all have different goals and motivations.  None of them are either completely good or evil, with the exception of one.  He's a crazed serial killer that isn't interested in the battle at all, he only wants to cause death and destruction. He eventually gets taken out by the other teams when his servant (also an insane murderer) summons an Old One to attack the city.  I heard this is actually a prequel to another series and movie that I haven't seen yet.

Knights of Sidonia:  This one is a Netflix exclusive.  Think Battlestar Galactica with giant robots instead of vipers, and crazy bio-organic space monsters instead of Cylons.  Really liked the first season,  but the second one declined drastically.  The second one was nothing but a bunch of stupid relationship drama.   Way too much of that crap, and not nearly enough giant robots shooting monsters.

Full Metal Alchemist:  Two brothers with magical talent try to bring their mother back from the dead and it goes horribly wrong.   They join the military and wander the land trying to find a way to undo some of the damage they caused and have various adventures along the way.   Fairly good, but it does have some of the usual anime things I hate.  It's fond of using the wacky comedy bits where the animation looks all weird.  I hate that crap.  There are also two different versions of this show. The original one came out when the source material was still being written, and then it drastically diverged.   It was remade a few years later with a different story line that followed the events of the manga after the original diverged.  I haven't seen that version.

I've heard a lot of people like Robotech, but I never saw it.   I didn't have cable in the 1980's, and it was never syndicated here in Kansas when I was growing up.  I did read the novelizations when I was in junior high and enjoyed them,  but  never saw the show they were based on.

I didn't like Harlock.  It seemed way too disjointed.  Like it was edited together and whole sections were missing.

I think Attack on Titan on Netflix is the subbed version.   You can probably get the dubbed version on the Adult Swim website.   I know purists hate me, but I can't stand the subbed versions in Japanese.

I am a big fan of Robotech.

A few more great films:

Nausica: Valley of the Wind
Steamboy
Princess Mononoke
Akira
A Wind Called Amnesia
Unico and the Island of Magic (very bizarre/surreal, kinda like a psychotic 6yr olds fever dream)
Castle In The Sky
Spirited Away

This thread definitely took a different turn then I thought it would.

To kind of marry the strangeness with current anime discussion, I was trying to post the scene from Fooly Cooly with the sexy breakfast egg/chin dance. Sadly, my Google-fu was not strong enough.

Never got into anime, but a friend forced me to watch Fooly Cooly. I also enjoyed yu yu hakusho on my own accord.

Definitely check out Fooly Cooly. It's a right of passage in anime. It's about loss of innocence or something...? Guys who are into this stuff more than I am can debate that.

All I know is it had fighting robots, cats, school girls in uniform, Nazi uniforms, and basically all the other cliche stuff we discuss about Japan on here.

All I remember about it was that there was some guy that would cruise around town on roller skates and hit people with an aluminum baseball bat.    EDIT:  After looking that up, that was actually a different show called Paranoia Agent.   It must have been on around the same time on Cartoon Network.

Whoa! Blast from the past! Completely forgot the name of it, but was the baseball bat bent on the end and he wore a mask (hockey-ish mask)? It was creepy and kinda suspenseful (at least to my young mind watching cartoon network at the time). The guy even drug his bat on the pavement to make sparks for scary effect while he roller bladed about, terrorising the city at night. That one seemed cool.

Fooly Cooly was about 6 episodes long in it's entirety.

Grave of the Fireflies is not the typical anime, takes place in WWII Japan.  It was one of the first films we watched for my college film class, and we all wondered why we were going to watch japanimation.  It is a great film, but I agree with JackCrow, I don't think I will ever watch it again.

Paranoia Agent.  Remember it from Adult Swim, back when I was in college.  It made prettymuch no goddamn sense.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paranoia_Agent (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paranoia_Agent)

Quote
Tsukiko Sagi, a shy character designer who created the immensely popular pink dog Maromi, finds herself under pressure to repeat her success. As she walks home that night, she is attacked by an elementary school boy on inline skates. Two police detectives, Keiichi Ikari and Mitsuhiro Maniwa, are assigned to the case. They suspect that Tsukiko is lying about the attack, until they receive word of a second victim.

Soon the attacker, dubbed Lil' Slugger (Shōnen Batto in Japanese, meaning "Bat Boy") is blamed for a series of street assaults in Tokyo. None of the victims can recall the boy's face and only three distinct details are left in their memories: golden inline skates, a baseball cap, and the weapon: a bent golden baseball bat. Ikari and Maniwa set out to track down the perpetrator and put an end to his crimes. Their hunt is unsuccessful, however, and the investigation eventually leads to both men losing their positions as police detectives.

As the attacks continue, it is revealed that they are not random. Instead, Lil' Slugger seems to target people in crisis, and the attacks, though violent, lead to some improvement in the life of the victim. Maniwa becomes convinced that Lil' Slugger is a supernatural force, driven to rescue the desperate from their tragedies through violence. He becomes obsessive, broadcasting his warning about Lil' Slugger via shortwave radio and seeking a way to kill the supernatural assailant.

As public fear of Lil' Slugger intensifies, so do his (supposed) attacks, and the line between truth and fiction becomes blurred. At the same time, public anticipation for the launch of the Maromi television series reaches a fanatical high, almost as if the fear of one is feeding (and feeding off) the anticipation for the other.

Things come to an end on the night that the Maromi show is set to air. Ikari, now a private security guard, and Maniwa, now a wandering "knight," attempt to battle Lil' Slugger, now an incredibly powerful force. They confront Tsukiko, and she confesses that Maromi was based on a real puppy that Tsukiko had in childhood, whose leash she had one day accidentally dropped, allowing the puppy to run into traffic where it was killed. Instead of taking responsibility for the puppy's death, young Tsukiko invented a story about a bat-wielding, skate-wearing puppy killer—Lil' Slugger's first "attack."

Ultimately, Lil' Slugger is a paranormal figment of Tsukiko's guilt and fear, brought inexplicably to life when the adult Tsukiko desperately needed to escape her responsibilities and then fed and nurtured by the fear of the populace. In a way, Tsukiko does fulfill her job by creating a character (Lil' Slugger) that becomes just as big a sensation as Maromi. When Tsukiko finally confesses the truth, and in doing so accepts the guilt for the death of Maromi, Lil' Slugger is defeated.

The series was weirder than the description.  The girl's creation-given-life ultimately destroys Tokyo.  :scrutiny

I watched about 20 minutes of that show when it was on Adult Swim.   It was a giant WTF? for me.   I just didn't get it and never watched anymore of it.   Prior to watching Cowboy Bebop in 2001,  I hadn't seen any anime at all.  I was hoping to find more like that on Cartoon Network after they finished the run and started showing other shows like FLCL and Paranoia Agent.  I was sorely disappointed.   It's been almost 15 years since then, and the number of anime shows that I have liked is still in single digits.  I like animation in general and I think it offers a lot of possibilities that can't be done well in live action.  However, I think there is just something that doesn't translate that puts me off with most of the Japanese stuff.

Thanks for that in depth post, NC.

On one hand, "wtf Japan?" On the other hand, scary monsters which are some physical amalgamation of guilt? That is an interesting fictional plot point and one which I've seen before.

Reaching a little bit here and on unsteady ground due to being a fly by fan, but if memory recalls correctly the videogame silent hill 2 had a monster in it by the name of pyramid head which was the amalgamation of the main character's guilt and grief about his dead wife. The monsters were only vanquished after he came to terms with the situation (just not before he had personal loss of one of the other characters in the game whom was killed by pyramid head, which there are several theories behind of why).

Similiar plot devices and seeing as the maker of the game was Takayoshi Sato I never even drifted the thread, cos we are still in Japan.

I either stumbled into something philosophically brilliant or it is late and I need to get some damn sleep. Probably the latter :yawn.

Just watched episodes 18 and 19 of Fate Zero.  They detailed Kiritsugu's origin story.   The guy would have made an excellent MCB agent if he was in the MHI universe. He was gunning down evil mages, vampires, and zombies like a pro.  He wasn't quite as ruthless as Franks, but only because he actually felt remorse after he did bad stuff for good reasons.  If you like the MHI books, I'd recommend checking them out.  They are standalone from the rest of the series,  so you can watch them out of order.

Do we have any member from Japan? Or at least stationed there? I think we've got a bloke from England (if that's the wrong terminology please correct me).

I was stationed at Misawa from 1997-2001 and I can tell you Japan can be a very weird place...but also extremely cool at the same time.  For all of the anime that's imported from Japan, I really didn't see much of it on TV, maybe some Naruto, Doremon(sp), and a few others.  There are more variety shows than anything else and they are pretty wacky.  I did like Rock Fujiyama with Marty Friedman & Rolly, that was a really cool show and you didn't have to understand Japanese to watch it.  I did marry a Japanese woman from Sapporo and imported her back to NC, but she was really off the rails and I had to escape that mistake before it got too expensive...but that's a whole 'nother story.

The graduation thing seems kind of cool,  but it seems like it would cause logistical problems.   For a large class, ceremonies are bad enough with everyone hustling through.   I can only imagine how much it would slow things up if hundreds of people had to maneuver in large and elaborate costumes.

I know it is bad enough when someone at a con is trying to navigate the floor in something crazy.

If you want some serious Japanity, there's four or five mini-movies in the ABC's of Death (movies by American, French, Mexican, Italian and Swedish filmmakers, one for every letter of the alphabet) that just...

I can't show them.  There's nudity in every one except "Nuptuals" - (and that's the least weird movie in the set, complete with a parrot mimicing the cheating boyfriend's side chick's orgasm, and that the boyfriend is named Shawn).

And the Z (the Japanese word for Extinction) has slush-like rice, a huge penile prosthetic with a switchblade down the urethra... and so much more...

It's a mixed bag, but it's enjoyable.

It has got to be the radiation or something... There is no way a normal human DNA strand can make a mind to produce such things.
radiation.............or the collective damage psyche of a nation who has regularly seen their hopes and dreams stomped by large reptiles

if you took ALL of the acid ever dropped at ALL of The Grateful Dead concerts ever played.......I doubt if you could come up with half of this stuff

Nope, but there is a fair collection of new anime (including Knights of Sidonia, and Attack on Titan)... There's also a pretty good Captain Harlock CGI movie...

I have been up in Canada this week for work.  Not much to do at night besides watch Netflix on the Firestick I brought with me.  Stumbled across an anime called Steins;Gate that is pretty good.  It is about a college student that is a paranoid conspiracy theorist and wannabe mad scientist.  He accidentally invents a way to send text messages into the past and freaky time travel stuff ensues.  They incorporate a lot of elements from that John Titor thing that was all over the Internet and Coast to Coast AM about 15 years ago.  The first episode is a bit hard to follow due to the weird chronology and paranoid rantings from the protagonist,  but I am 4 episodes in and it is starting to come together now.  Unfortunately, I think it is only on Canadian netflix, so I will have to binge watch it all before I go home or use a proxy when I get back.

Post by: ksuguy on December 18, 2015, 12:10:30 am
Ok, finished binge watching the series.  It was brilliant.  Probably the best time travel SF story I have ever seen. The first half starts a little slow since it is mainly setup as they gradually puzzle out how time travel works.  It is a slow burn and seemingly minor details will lead to horrific consequences later (or is that earlier?  ;))  The second half is sort of a dystopian version of Groundhog Day with bits of the Terminator and Back to the Future 2 mixed in.  It also had some genuinely hilarious moments and references sprinkled throughout.

The voice acting is all top notch, and since it is set in a version of 2010 that is supposed to mirror the real world, it is blessedly free of the usual stupid anime tropes.  It is kind of annoying they could not use real brand names.  So IBM is referred to as IBN, CERN is SERN, the characters drink DK Pepper, etc.  That is a minor quibble though.  The art style is not over the top.  Similar to Cowboy Bebop or Ghost in the Shell.  I highly recommend it.   I don't think it is on US netflix yet, but it is probably online somewhere.  Stick with the dubbed version.

That outfit is called a seifuku (not the actual spelling...but you should get the idea) and is what just about every school girl wears in Japan.  When I was stationed at Misawa I had some people asking me to buy a uniform for their gf/wife but the sticker shock of what they cost kept them with Party City costumes or something.

That one was actually kind of funny.   :cool    Looks like a script for a Japanese version of "The Big Bang Theory".

There's actually some really tasty food and beers to be found at World Market.

Sent from my iPad using a bunch of electrons, copper, and probably some fiber optic cable

My sister once made a bed for our cats, using a frame of 1x2s and a length of canvas fabric. They loved it, but she didn't build it to stand up to Tolkien, my part-Maine Coon 17lber...

I miss that cat.

In Japanese mythology, demons only travel in straight lines...

Besides, curves are...fun. Much more pleasant to the eye than brutalism.

Stalinist architecture can be 'fun' and it is not curvy :neener .

Fine, if you want curves and aesthetics, there is always classic European architecture to fall back on.

Every time they tell me there are no real journalists anymore, I think of Hunter S Thompson. They don't make them like they used to  :rotfl .

Well, in his case that's not entirely a bad thing.   :facepalm   I honestly don't think the term "journalist" was seriously applied to Mr. Thompson for the last twenty years or so prior to his passing.  Alcoholic, drug addled, lunatic - perhaps.  Journalist was a bit of a stretch though.
