Movies that I actually want to see...
« on: July 29, 2019, 12:13:25 pm »
I don't go to movies much, but this fall there's a spate coming out, most of them within a month, that I actually want to see:

18 October:  Zombieland 2

1 November: Terminator: Dark Fate

8 November: Midway (I guess this is for Veteran's Day, but they really should have done this the first Friday in June)

15 November:  Ford vs Ferrari

Note to The House of Mouse:  Y'all done screwed up Star Wars.  It doesn't make the list.

To be fair, George Lucas screwed it up first.   Then Disney partially fixed it with Rogue One, then they came back and set it all on fire.

The prequels were disappointing, to be sure...but not to the level of f***ery that Disney achieved.

Rogue One, by itself, is a good flick (especially if you ignore the utterly horrible planning and tactics for the information raid.)

It still annoyed me, for a couple of reasons:

    1) Rogue One is the call sign of Wedge Antilles, commander of Rogue Squadron, both in Empire and in the EU.  Giving it to someone else is heresy.

    2) The story of the information raid to get the Death Star plans was already told in the UE (larger rant about the de-canonization of the UE omitted).  And for the Woke crowd, the hero/leader was even female - Han Solo's ex-girlfriend, Bria Tharen.  Of course, she and all her commandos died in the raid, so it's not a very satisfying Hollywood ending.  Actually, the back story on Tharen's Red Hand Squadron would have made a good TV (mini) series for Disney, a la The Mandalorian, but what do I know.

But as of now, I plan on skipping Rise of Skywalker in the theater.  Probably check it out from the library when it comes out on DVD or BlueRay.

    1. From what I gather, the idea of calling this Rogue One was to retroactively give a source for the Rogue Squadron tradition.

    2. Everybody died in Rogue One, too, so they didn't gain anything there. Which books were those, though? I have most of the UE, but I don't think I have those... not that I've read all the ones I have, but still...

The later Han Solo trilogy (The Paradise Snare, The Hutt Gambit and Rebel Dawn) featured a rebel mission to capture the Death Star plans in its final book. The mission was undertaken by a team led by Solo's former girlfriend Bria Tharen.

It's mostly in the last book, Rebel Dawn.  The Death Star plans mission is kind of an epilogue.  The main focus involved Tharen using Solo as an in to hire a bunch of smuggler pilots as mercs to assist in a raid to knock over a Hutt run spice processing world (where Tharen had been enslaved herself).  The group that goes with Solo and Tharen (which includes Lando) gets stiffed on their share of the profit, because the Rebels need all the $$$ for the Death Star plans mission.  (This provides backstory to the way Lando greets Solo when they first meet in Empire)

I didn't see Zombieland when it came out, so I rectified that last night.  Looking forward to the sequel.

Oh, speaking of sequels... Hitman's Bodyguard is getting a sequel... The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard... Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson, and Salma Hayek ( :P ) all reprise their roles...

I still need to see the first movie.

Hopefully Zombieland 2 lives up to its predecessor.

Can't say I'm too into the latest Terminator... but we'll see.

I don't really care for drama films, but Ford vs Ferrari looks like it'll be a lot of fun. I may actually catch that in theaters.

As for Star Wars.... not gonna lie, TLJ left me bitterly disappointed, so much so that I didn't watch Solo until a few months ago. I may catch Rise of Skywalker in theaters, but almost certainly not during opening week. And I'm going into it with absolutely zero expectations.

I typically don't watch movies. That being said, Zombieland is a type of associative comfort food for me. It released at a time period when I was half way through highschool and life was carefree, all my friends had not been spread by the winds of life yet, and there were many videogames and fun times to be had. When it came out, I saw it in theatre with said friends and had a blast and every time I watch it, it brings me back.

It's one of the few movies that I've rewatched many times and it's about time I watch it again (seeing as it has been a couple years).

I really hope they don't fluff up the sequel, if they do, the 16 year old in me will be pissed  :scrutiny .

In an interview in June, Scorsese said Netflix was the only one willing to bankroll the new film.

“No one else did. No one else did,” said Scorsese, who recently release a new Bob Dylan documentary on the streaming service.

“We decided to make it with the understanding that it’ll maybe never be shown in theatres. They said, ‘You would have a time in theatres’ — a few weeks or whatever. I said fine. The idea was to make the movie, you see.”

The fact that a Scorsese helmed film couldn't get funding from anyone besides Netflix astounds me.

It's a rare movie I'll pay for anymore.  Too much PC and politics involved, if not in the flick directly, then in the public mouthing off of those involved.

I stopped watching the MCU after that anti-Trump commercial that Whedon put together.  I think there's maybe 5 or 6 I haven't watched.  Or 10?  Or ???  I really have no idea.

Last movie I watched in a theater was a couple of weeks ago, Toy Story 4, and then only because the 7-yo grandchild was visiting from Omaha.  Can't recall the one prior to that.

Finally saw SW8 about a month ago, and then only because we checked it out from the library.  No one in Hollyweird got a dime from us on that one.

Just saw the trailer for that. It actually looks pretty damn good. Sure to make Leftists' heads explode all over the country.

Trailer looks good.  Maybe even good enough to drag myself into a theater full of people and make me buy overpriced popcorn and eat it.  :hmm

Might have to sleep on it though.  Wouldn't want to make any rash decisions I'd regret later.   :coffee

Which ones he directed aren't the issue.  He got all the actors involved to dump on Trump.  It is they that I am refusing to watch.

I actually did see GotG 1 and liked it.  I missed 2.  And when they threw all of them together with all the rest is their super duper crossover...for the most part, I like to avoid crossing the streams.  Let each (anti) hero exist in their own story line.

    Langenator -

No problem with Guardians of the Galaxy.

Just all the Avengers actors that were part of that hit piece.  Unfortunately, if there were any Avengers actors that weren't part of it, well, sorry, collateral financial damage.
