F-22 ???
« on: September 26, 2018, 04:39:56 pm »

There were 6 of them doing what looked to be practice landing runs. They would take off cruise out a bit turn a quick circle(one pulled cloud/fog on his wing while banking) and come back in landing gear down like to land then just throttle up, landing gear up and circle again.

It was a cool little 10 minute show while out shopping just outside Tinker AFB.

Maybe you saw them better in person, but might that instead be an F-35?

They appeared to be twin motors, but I am by no stretch knowledgeable on airplanes at all.

Hard to see the detail in the photos but the vertical stabilizers seem to have a slight forward rake that would indicate the F-22.   :shrug

Neither am I, but an easy tell is the F22 has dual rectangular exhaust, while the F35 has a single large circular exhaust, not unlike an F16.

They were not round at all. So that is why I assumed they were F22. I know Tinker does some sort of engine maintenance on the F22.

I didn't take pics until they were almost done and landing. I was too busy watching the show.

It is sometimes neat to live near Tinker. Most of the time it is just irritating with the AWACS planes landing and taking off what seems like all day everyday.

We live about 12 miles north of the air base, but that is basically right on top of it in Oklahoma terms. We do most of our shopping in Midwest City which surrounds Tinker. The shopping center we were at is directly next door to the main Tinker entrance.

If you live near a military base you sort of get used to the activity on some level and only something unusual causes you to look up and take notice.  For a lot of us that amounted to somebody new to the area complaining publicly about noise/traffic/detours/etc. and getting an impromptu education on learning to live graciously with one's neighbors.

I would agree that night exercises at the nearby bombing/gunnery range could be considered annoying when all you really wanted to do was sleep but it was really no more so than the frequent thunderstorms that you also couldn't do anything about.  For the record that was Fort McClellan, the Pelham Range and the Bynum Ordnance Depot in Alabama.

When I lived in Newport News, my neighborhood was right under the circle used by Air Force One (or whatever they call it when POTUS isn't on it) when they would do touch and gos and Newport News airport.
