Vietcong - a first-person shooter, several years old now but still extremely high quality - made by the same guys who did "Mafia". Excellent graphics even by today's standards, and very smooth gameplay. They really made the vegetation of the jungle look real. But the best part - the selection of weapons!!! Not only is nearly every historical US rifle and subgun available, you can also pick up the enemy's weapons at any time and use them! Mosins, SKSs, STV40s, SVDs, AKs - all accurately modeled, right down to the most minute details, and they all feature realistic iron-sights - NOT crosshairs!!!

All the weapons available in the game:

    * Knife
    * Colt M1911A1
    * .38 Revolver
    * Smith & Wesson Model.39 "Hush Puppy"
    * M1 Carbine (Bayonet can be attached on Fist Alpha expansion pack)
    * M1D Garand
    * Winchester Model 70 Rifle
    * M1A1 Thompson
    * M3A1 "Grease Gun"
    * M16 (Bayonet can be attached on Fist Alpha expansion pack)
    * Remington 870 Shotgun
    * M60 GPMG (General Purpose Machine Gun)
    * M79 (Only available in single player mode)
    * M67 Hand Grenade
    * M18A1 Claymore AP (Anti-Personnel) Mine
    * Browning M2HB .50 caliber Machine Gun (Mounted on UH-1 Huey helicopters)
    * M14 + (M14 With Optics)(Cannot be fitted with a bayonet in game, unlike its real life counterpart.)
    * Sten Mk.IIS (silenced version)

Viet Cong / North Vietnam Weapons

    * Knife
    * Makarov PM
    * TT-33
    * .38 Revolver
    * SKS Simonov (Bayonet can be attached on Fist Alpha expansion pack)
    * Dragunov SVD (Bayonet can be attached on Fist Alpha expansion pack)
    * Mosin Nagant (Cannot be fitted with a bayonet in Fist Alpha expansion pack, unlike its real life counterpart)
    * PPSh-41
    * PPS-43
    * AK-47 (Bayonet can be attached on Fist Alpha expansion pack)
    * Baikal IZH-43
    * RPD Degtarev
    * Stick Hand Grenade
    * Booby Trap (Grenade)
    * Škorpion vz. 61
    * SVT-40 + (SVT-40 With Optics) (Actually an AVT-40) (Cannot be fitted with a bayonet in game, unlike its real life counterpart)
    * Degtyarev DP

In between missions you can even go to the SHOOTING RANGE on the base and actually try out all these weapons on targets, before selecting your gear for the next mission!!!

Some screenshots:

Super realism and incredible detail. Be sure to get the "Purple Haze" or "Fist Alpha" expansion-packs, to get the bonus weapons like the M14 and SVT40. Since this game is so old, you can get it for like 10 dollars nowadays! This game has aged better than any shooter I can think of. I have the best new games and I still play this old one all the time.

    I have that game, its pretty good.

    the computer critic in me would like to point out that the programmers didn't bother to make more than one model for the hand of the VC as they are all holding the MN 91/30s like they had pistol grips lol

    I love this game!

    I used to play its multiplayer all the time.  Got really good at it, too.  I need to reinstall it.

    As for the sequel, Vietcong 2... it's kinda, well... laggy.  But other than that, it's a decent game, too... except its multiplayer sucks.

    Great game, and make sure to check out the add-on (Purple Haze O0--or is that the package with both, I forget), the one that had the LRRP group--I thought it was better than the original.
    But do not bother with the Viet Cong 2, it was a total disappointment as all the jungle was gone and you fought in Hue. One of the best features of the game (besides the great guns) was the jungle, very well done--especially for the time.

    I love this game and played it again and again and again.

    A real plus is that when you heal yourself you only heal about 95% of your wound, so on a long mission you might be spending a lot of time at 75% health or 50% health just because you have been shot a dozen times.  Sure, not exactly realistic but it does make you worry about every shot, no magic 100% full, so no worries about anything.

    I also thought the AI was quite good.  The enemy would run for cover.

    A third factor was body movement.  You could walk or run, and you could stand, crouch, or go prone (if memory serves) what really stands out though is if you were crouched, you crouched really low, and when you aimed your weapon to use the iron sights your character would straighten up a little.  This allowed you to take total cover behind a medium sized rock or an open window, then pop up and shoot, then go back to total cover.

    A few weapons issues are present.  As always, shotguns will do great damage at knife stabbing range, but even firing at a guy on the other side of the room will require mutlipe shots to take him down, even 20 feet away and it will take 4-5 shots, if not more, yet the damage representation makes it look like oyu are uisng buckshot not birdshot.

    Second, they used a winchester model 52 22LR rifle to stand in for the winchester model 70, and you get the 5 cartridges in the gun plus 18 more shells in your pocket, which is extremely limiting (compare to 100 rounds of Mosin Nagant ammo you can carry)

    The Mosin Nagant is an early find, and the damage is quite low compared to the AK-47 or M-16.  While the M1 carbine which is another very early access gun is portrayed as weak, the SKS is billed as the Viet Cong equivalent, and hence it too is much weaker than the AK-47
