MAC/V SOG Bowie
« on: February 12, 2018, 10:10:55 pm »
For the last few years I have gotten more into the mid-tech and semi-production range of knife fandom. Among my favorite makers of these style knives is Bark River Knives of Escanaba Michigan. The Escanaba area, famous for being the home of the original Marble's knife company, has become the home of so many knife makers today that it is starting to be referred to as New Sheffield, akin to the region in England famous for producing Bowie and sporting knives in the nineteenth century.

I've got a bunch of Bark Rivers now, but my newest is also one that I've been excited about grabbing since it was first released last year.

Matt and Jenna Martin of Vehement Knives (fresh to the New Sheffield area) and Mike and Jim Stewart of Bark River teamed up to create the first American made version of the Vietnam-era CISO knife, usually known as the MAC/V SOG knife. Both companies are run by people who have a thing for vintage military and sporting knives and man, they hit the ball out of the park with this design.

The 6 1/4" blade is made from Crucible CPM-3V tool steel, which is orders of magnitude tougher than 1095 (one of my favorite common steels) and holds its edge for a good long while. Mine came with an antique ivory micarta handle, and the guard and pommel are brass, with the full length tang secured by a nut on the bottom of the pommel. The sheath, designed by Jenna Martin, is black leather, ambidextrous, and made for either MOLLE webbing or belt carry, with a reversible retention snap.

This is a really nice blade. It is certainly going to be one of my go-to bush knives, and I wouldn't be worried about having it in a fight either. Like the original CISO knife designed by Ben Baker, this one is designed to help men get through the hard times. Not having owned a SOG-style knife before, I can really see the appeal. It's a unique and attractive style, and when done by the crew at Bark River, is an awesome thing to own.

Do we forget that cops were primarily still using 6 Shot Revolvers well through the mid 80's? It wasn't until after 1986 that most departments then relented and went to autos.
Capacity wasn't really an issue then... and honestly really it's not even an issue now.

And thanks. I love it, too. BRK and Vehement do some great work.

Also, today I got something else in the mail from a guy in Ireland. But I can't get any good pics this time of night, so that'll have to wait until tomorrow. It's Bowie-licious. :D

Ah. MTK20, SOG Knives still makes a few versions of the SOG knife, although they are no longer made in Seki City, Japan, but rather Taiwan, and are a tad over-priced for the steel you're getting, IMO. They aren't as bad as all that, and they are pretty cool knives, but not as nice as they used to be. If you can find one of the old model pre-2008 SOG's, they are pretty sweet. I passed up more than a few back in the '90's, and wish I hadn't. The glory days of SOG Knives are gone forever.

Cold Steel made a version of the SOG knife for awhile, the UWK, more than a decade ago, but they are hard to find these days.

I literally just stumbled across a Greg Wall custom on my FB feed. He makes some gorgeous knives in the Randall style, mostly, and does some others here and there. His sheaths are nice as well.

Other than that, there are no others I'm aware of. The Bark River version is the first American-made production SOG, and are made from premium materials. Matt Martin just finished the other version of the old Vietnam-era SOG knife, The Recondo, a day after I posted in the OP. This new model is going to mirror the fighting knife they made for one of the SOG groups that wanted a longer blade for more efficient killing. The original was patterned off of one of my favorite Randall patterns, the Model 3-7 Fighter, only with the classic SOG handle and hardware. Here's a pic of the CAD design for it. I'm a sucker this particular pattern of blade.

Yes sir! Something about the antique ivory micarta I just love. Pity it's no longer being made. I also have a BRK Adventurer II in AIM and 20CV steel, and it's one of my favorite EDCs. You just can't get any classier. :thumbup1

I wonder how many of these were truly used in combat? I'm sure there's a book out there somewhere about Vietnam knife fighting  :hmm .
