Knife Scabbards and sheaths
« on: March 25, 2011, 02:00:08 pm »
Alright I have a question to you guys out there looking for some input and some help. I like to have a knife handy on my person, though since I've started carrying 24/7 it's actually tough to carry a knife for me. It seems that if I look at where to put it there is already a gun there, so there are two problems. One I need a place to carry a knife that doesn't interfere with an existing bit of what I carry, that part well is easier I think than the second bit.

The other part I'm finding is that for whatever reason I'm finding knives more difficult to conceal and less comfortable to carry then even a fairly large gun, and it's a bit of a surprise. There isn't much of a good reason that I can come up with why they are hard to conceal, could be shape or length I guess, but something so thin would seem easy to conceal to me, however in my testing that hasn't been the case. So I'm looking for pictures of scabbards that you use or like, and why.

I prefer fixed blade knives generally, but I'm not against a good folder, I've got a fair number of knives around various styles, and since this isn't really much of a fighting implement I'm not too concerned it be a pure fighting knife. More of a good decent general purpose/in a pinch useable fighting weapon, I just mostly would like to find a way to carry a knife again just need to figure out how;)

Oh and I should include, normal carry is gun strong side around 3-4, 1-2 mags weak side around 8 or so, gun in left pocket, mag/flashlight in right pocket. So that leaves some of the waist area front and rear(which I find doesn't conceal well), rear pockets(but depending on how the knife is, that's an area that bends and doesn't seem to work well with flat items like knives.

Just more less wondering if an outsider looking in so to speak can come up with some ideas or suggestions that I haven't thought of. Oh and as usual it's something I'd build myself so pictures of styles/features on other rigs are great, doesn't probably matter if it's for sale or not, material as well doesn't matter. I can build it out of leather or kydex or whatever is best in the application. Generally speaking I prefer leather but with a knife, I'm willing to branch a little.

Take care and thanks for any ideas;)

I don't see the need for a sheath knife for EDC.  Get a good folder and toss it in your pocket.

For EDC it's hard to beat a folder and there are some very good ones out there.  Where I live too, a fixed blade knife in a sheath which is not immediately visible can also be construed as a "concealed weapon", so pocket knives are the way to go.

But, based on what you have said, a knife like the Kabar TDI, CRKT Bear Claw, etc... at about 10-11 in a canted inside the waist sheath would seem to be ideal.

I carry a becker necker horizontally in sob position, the two loops I placed on the kydex sheath go on each side of my rear belt loop. Now it conceals very well, doesn't interfere with holster or mag carrier and it's very comfortable. I drive a bus for a living and i hardly notice it's there,

I carry the Snody / Benchmade Instigator in my boot every day. strangelittleman gave it to me as a kneck knife and I sometimes do that if wearing shorts.

Here is the Snody and the Cold Steel Kobun side by side. The Kobun is a bit to large for me to carry in my boot or around my neck but still too small for much else. I just don't like it. Its too thin and unsubstantial. I am looking to trade with one of the Narc officers. They are Gear Qweers on an amazing level. All I have to say is "Hey guys look at this cool U/C knife I found..." and they will run with it.

The Snody sheath fits well behind my ankle knob because of its tapered sheath.

Kydex or another type of plastic "jump safe" sheath is the only kind I use anymore. Leather just ain't it when it comes to my knive sheaths anymore. I even replaced my beloved KaBar leather sheath with a kydex. I love the "click in" capability you can get with a kydex sheath. I've been pondering a kydex sheath for my khukri too when I get it finished.

I am going to replace the gutted para cord grip with ungutted cord for the extra cordage if needed in a pinch.

I usually prefer a folder for every day carry. One in the front right pocket ad one in the rear right pocket with a Gerbor tool in the front left pocket. In NC carrying a fixed blade concealed is illegal so most everyone carries big folders.

Horizontal appendix carry works for something not too large, either folder or fixed.  The other option might be hip pocket - vertical beside the wallet.

Sorry to resurrect a dead thread if that's not the norm (still not sure of forum manners here), but I both like and dislike the KB TDI for EDC. I clip it inside a pocket instead of a belt, so it takes up some external pocket space, but I don't get the angled handle digging into my side when I sit. I only feel it digging in if I'm seated and leaning forward for a long time (which I sometimes do), but you can move it around bit. If you wear your shirt out, or dark jeans, it's virtually invisible, and only noticeable if someone's looking straight at it. It does look a bit like a gun handle and will print if that's a concern for you, whereas no one notices or cares about the Leatherman multitool I have in my other pocket.

The Kydex sheath keeps it pretty clear of lint and moisture, and obviously, from digging holes into my leg, and the clip works well with even thinner denim. If you have shallow pockets or stretchy denim it will bag a bit, though.
