I actually had the idea for a PhD dissertation once upon a time: "To Execute the Laws of the Union: Domestic Employment of the Federal Military, 1789-present."  I would have excluded the Indian wars and the Civil War, but the draft riots would probably have qualified for inclusion.  The idea came from reviewing the Color series of war plans.  There was one (either White or Blue, I forget) that was for domestic insurrection/rebellion.

I'm pretty sure my regiment - 6th Infantry - was one of the units sent to NYC to put down the riots.  I know that Gettysburg is the regiment's last Civil War campaign streamer, because there simply wasn't much left of the regiment after that.

We also have a "dumbed down population" problem, unable to to analyze the facts for themselves and thus dependent on talking heads to tell them what to think.

A policy of "Looters will be shot on sight" coupled with gun mounted cameras recording video AND live streaming it non-stop might put a damper on the festivities. 

The military intervention during the "civil rights" protest era in the 1960's comes to mind - especially in light of recent events.  There was an interesting piece on PJMedia yesterday but it won't let me link it.  Try a web search for PJMedia column by Megan Fox 6/2/2020.  Title as follows:

Agreed.  At this point teaching people how to think instead of what to think would be considered revolutionary. 

As for the "Looters will be shot on sight" policy, I think it might already be in effect, unofficially, in many suburbs and rural areas.
