Common Sense will not be tolerated...
« on: December 28, 2015, 09:47:43 am »
So I woke up to an email from my Sheriff about policy changes coming into effect. Nothing really new as they are always changing some wording here and there. But this policy change had me a little PO'ed. New policy is that we can no longer carry personally owned patrol rifles on duty. After getting in touch with the training staff I was informed that the policy goes into effect immediately but they have no rifles to issue and won't buy any till the summer, at earliest, and that depends on if they spend the money on something else. So not only are we running 120 people down from minimum staffing on patrol, but they essentially take away one of my tools from the job.

Not much I can do as training is doing their own pi****g and moaning on our behalf and the Sheriff will just say he knows best. But anyway, had to vent. Just glad I managed to snag a county issued shotgun with rifle sights at least.

Just sit back and pay close attention. You'll see more of this should you stay in gov't employment. This is probably a very slick move the Sheriff is making that will force the powers that be to buy patrols rifles in a large package and to increase the dept.'s overall budget for the next fiscal year.
It's a typical power move that is needed from time to time, to force the issue at hand and get the money that is needed from the powers that be.

In this political environment, with Homeland Security being such a hot button topic, I'm reasonably sure this what's going on, based on the very limited info you've provided and I'm sure that the powers that be won't make the dept. wait until summer. They'll magically find the funding for the patrol rifles and other needed "Homeland Security" equipment.

In the coming days/weeks, you'll find this lack of patrol rifles and other equipment will be leaked to the press and public, there will be an uproar and outrage from concerned citizens and magically delicious, new gear will be inbound.

      In short, politics/business as usual.

PS: You mentioned having been issued a shotty w/ slug sights...Good if the dept is also issuing slugs along with buck and you've been trained and qual'ed on the use of slug.  There's very few deadly force scenarios in the LE world that can't be adroitly managed by a shotty w/ slugs and buck.

Could be because you have to qualify with it, and the range officer would have to be familiar with every firearm used.  Now if you have 125 officers carrying a different gun think how hard that could be.

one of the bigger ticket items we plan for this coming year is purchase of patrol rifles.   Not that we don't already have them.  But what we have is modified DRMO M-16A1 rifles from the Army.   They still have the giggle switch installed and our biggest concern is this admin ordering them taken back from LEA and returned to the Army, during his last year in office.

simple fix for that is a short list of "authorized" weapon systems / calibers.  If you permit only rifles of the AR platform in 5.56, then it becomes a very simple matter of record keeping and basic logistics.

You have to take the 8 hour class and qualify once a year whether it was issued or personal. And they already had the stipulation that it be .223.

What he said... now excuse me while I reminisce of the days when I could buy my own gear and the department just gave us a list of "guidelines".

Well an update to the situation.

Our training cadre has persevered and some good changes has come out of the situation.

A memo came and stated that we could carry our privately owned until issued a rifle.

Training also convinced the Sheriff that AR-15s would be the better choice as they were already set up for maintenance work because of our office's SWAT team.
They are currently looking at the Ruger AR556 or the S&W M&P-15 Sport Gen2. Though a couple of them are trying to get with Daniel Defense on a purchase to their specs as the order will be for 300+ rifles. So we will see.

I already had a lot of respect for our training staff and all they do to provide quality training with limited resources, but there pushing for quality tools for us  has upped it more.

As opposed to what?  What was the other option?

The county used to issue Mini-14s...we had problems with rear sights coming loose.
